How Long Mass Effect Legendary Edition Takes To Beat

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition releases on May 14, packaging together all three of the original trilogy’s games along with almost all of the DLC released over the course of the franchise’s six year run. That’s a lot of content to play through – and for first time players or even those who haven’t picked up the series since its initial release almost ten years ago, it may seem like a daunting task.

In a RPG with as much freedom of choice as Mass Effect, as well as a heavy focus on exploration and completion of side tasks (particularly in the latter two games, where levels of completion factor directly in to the player’s odds of victory), the total time it takes to play through the series will vary depending on playstyle. Completionists will find themselves spending much longer to beat Mass Effect: Legendary Edition than those who just speed straight through the story content.

BioWare has confirmed that while Pinnacle Station and Mass Effect 3’s multiplayer mode won’t be making comebacks in Legendary Edition, the remaster will still feature the other 40-plus Mass Effect DLC. Not all of these provide new story or gameplay content, however, as some are weapon and armor packs, so each and every individual DLC won’t necessarily add on to the game’s total play time.

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition’s Total Play Time

Mass Effect is easily the shortest of the trilogy, clocking in at around 15 to 30 hours depending on playstyle and adding in a couple more hours on top of that for DLC (shorter than it otherwise would have been, given the absence of Pinnacle Station). Mass Effect 2 and 3 end up being around the same length, give or take, though the third game features more DLC. Players can expect around 30 to 35 hours out of the latter two games of the series, or upwards of 45 to 50 hours including all additional content.

With a massive amount of side content, the final estimate of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition’s playtime will depend strongly on a player’s commitment to fully exploring the games – but generally speaking they can expect to get around 90 hours just playing through the main story alone. Players who delve into Mass Effect’s side quests will end up with around 120 hours of content. Both of these estimates include playing through all Mass Effect DLC. Without playing any DLC, the main story content would add up to around 65 hours.

Finally, players who focus more on completionism can expect to spend nearly 175 hours to complete the entire trilogy – so new and old players alike will have the opportunity to spend a whole lot of time in the Mass Effect universe. All in all, while Mass Effect: Legendary Edition brings forth a hefty serving of content, it isn’t too long for eager fans to plow through in just a couple week’s time.
