How Mad Sweeney Can Return In American Gods Season 3

Mad Sweeney has been an American Gods fan favorite since his first appearance in season 1; here’s how he could return in season 3. Based on the award-winning novel by Neil Gaiman, Starz’s American Gods tells the story of a man named Shadow Moon who becomes embroiled in a war between the Old Gods of mythology and the New Gods of media and technology. Since its premiere a few seasons ago, it has been mired in some controversy and a revolving cast of characters. However, one character fans unilaterally loved was Mad Sweeney, played by Pablo Schreiber.

When Shadow begins working for a man calling himself Mr. Wednesday, he learns that there is much more to the world than he ever could have imagined. Along the way, Shadow meets Mad Sweeney, a 6-foot tall leprechaun with more than a few screws loose. After a fight, Shadow wins Mad Sweeney’s “lucky” coin. Tossing it as a parting gift into his wife’s grave, Shadow inadvertently reanimates the recently deceased Laura, causing trouble for all parties involved.

The first and second seasons of American Gods see Mad Sweeney and Laura Moon begrudgingly team up to search for a way to bring Laura Moon back to life so that she can return Sweeney’s lucky coin, which is the only thing keeping her alive. Without the coin, Mad Sweeney’s luck sours significantly, rendering him even more vulnerable than he already is as an Old God with a fading, if not a nonexistent base of believers. When his and Laura’s search for life is more or less fruitless, Mad Sweeney decides to confront Wednesday, who he feels has taken advantage of him. Shadow, in an effort to protect Wednesday, accidentally kills Mad Sweeney with Wednesday’s spear, Gungir. In an act of retaliation, Sweeney hides the spear away in his hoard in the moments before he dies. Season 2 of American Gods ends with Laura carrying off Mad Sweeney’s corpse in the hopes of resurrecting him, supposedly so she can get Wednesday’s spear and exact her revenge.

Why Sweeney’s Gold Coin Didn’t Bring Him Back

How Mad Sweeney Can Return In American Gods Season 3

Though Laura returns Sweeney’s lucky coin in the American Gods season 3 premiere, he remains dead. The main reason for it is revealed in a remark made by Maman Brigitte, one of the loa Laura and Sweeney meet in New Orleans. Brigitte tells Laura that, although Baron Samedi did his best, “resurrecting a god isn’t as easy as you’d think. Especially when no one believes in him anymore.” The luck from Sweeney’s coin isn’t enough to raise him from the dead, even if it was enough to reanimate Laura. Because Mad Sweeney is a god, he needs belief to sustain him; that’s something he can’t get from his lucky coin.

No matter how much power it afforded Laura, the coin isn’t powerful enough to revive Mad Sweeney. It’s worth noting that while his luck often helps Sweeney avoid trouble, it isn’t enough to reverse a bad or unlucky event. It’s possible that if he’d had the coin during the confrontation with Wednesday and Shadow, he might have been able to avoid being run through by the spear. Unfortunately, though, it looks like Sweeney will need stronger stuff if he is going to be brought back from the dead. The coin could come into play later as Laura takes it when she departs the crypt, but only time will tell.

Why American Gods Still Needs Mad Sweeney

How Mad Sweeney Can Return In American Gods Season 3

Mad Sweeney’s death was a fittingly dramatic moment to conclude American Gods’ second season, but the series still needs this beloved character, both for the sake of the show’s plot and its fanbase. In terms of storytelling, Sweeney has become increasingly important to Laura’s character arc. Though she began in season 1 as somewhat unfeeling and numb, her quest to regain her life has contributed greatly to her personal growth, especially in season 3 episode 4, “The Unseen.” After her trip to purgatory, Laura is forced to confront the fact that she spent much of her life sabotaging herself as punishment for things that, though she blamed herself for them as a child, were totally out of her control. When she is brought back to life, Laura realizes that Sweeney loved her, and it was the mixing of his love-infused blood with Samedi’s potion that brought her back to life.

In addition to being the character many viewers consider to be American Gods’ best character, Mad Sweeney is key to another important plot point: Wednesday’s spear, Gungnir. In his last moments, Sweeney makes the spear disappear into his hoard, taking away what seems to be a key element in Wednesday’s plan to win the war against the New Gods. After several main characters including the Jinn, Salim, Shadow, and Wednesday himself went to so much trouble to get it, it would be disappointing for the spear not to come back into play. With no other way to access the hoard, Sweeney needs to return in order to restore it to Wednesday’s possession. It would be disappointing, too, for Laura not to gain any closure in the wake of this new stage of her character development. Regardless of whether she and Mad Sweeney pursue some kind of relationship, he needs to return to tie up these loose ends.

Finally, with so many American Gods cast members leaving the show, it would also greatly benefit the series to bring back Mad Sweeney. Season 2, episode 7, “Treasure of the Sun,” which explores Mad Sweeney’s background more in-depth, is the highest-rated episode of the season according to IMDb, further underscoring his return would give the show a much-needed shot in the arm. Mad Sweeney brings an excellent combination of humor and pathos to the series, and in the midst of the show’s ever-rising stakes, his presence is sorely missed. He also speaks brilliantly to the struggle of the Old Gods, who lose favor as newer beings and traditions threaten to stomp them out. As American Gods’ ratings continue to drop and its audience continues to dwindle, Mad Sweeney’s return could entice some of the show’s fans to resume their viewership and bring back an important facet of the show’s overall meaning.

How Sweeney Could Return (Despite Being Cremated)

Though being cremated doesn’t bode well for the resurrection of most, Mad Sweeney’s status as a god might allow him to transcend this particular roadblock. It’s fairly rare in American Gods for gods to die, and the corporeal form, while it holds significance, doesn’t seem to be the be-all, end-all that it is for mortals, especially considering the transformations of Media and Mr. World, to name a few. Additionally, fans have already seen Laura come back to life after turning to dust (with the help of Sweeney’s blood and Baron Samedi’s magic). If Laura, a mere mortal, can return from ash, surely Sweeney can as a god. It’s even possible that Laura herself holds the key to resurrecting Sweeney, as she may carry a piece of him within her: his blood. Should Laura discover that she loves Sweeney, Samedi may be able to create a potion like Laura’s to revive him. However, with Samedi off the grid, it’s likely Laura will have to seek out a different avenue.

In American Gods’ most recent episodes, Laura hitchhiked her way back to Cairo, Illinois with Mad Sweeney’s ashes in tow, forming an alliance with Salim (Omid Abtahi), who agrees to join her on her mission to kill Mr. Wednesday. Cairo’s funeral parlor is run by Mr. Ibis (the Egyptian god Thoth), who presents another possible way for Sweeney to return. As the god of wisdom and the operator of a funeral parlor, it is possible that Mr. Ibis will be able to resurrect Mad Sweeney – or, at the very least, might know how. Mr. Ibis will probably be able to offer some potential next steps, and with Laura’s history of stubborn determination, fans have good reason to hope that this isn’t the last they’ve seen of Pablo Schreiber’s Mad Sweeney. Though Mad Sweeney’s demise in Neil Gaiman’s novel is much more final, the character may well return to the American Gods as it explores new angles and possibilities, providing a new spin on the beloved classic.
