How Marvel Told Scarlett Johansson She Was In The Avengers

Before Scarlett Johansson played Black Widow, Marvel surprised her about her upcoming superhero role in The Avengers. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first real test came in 2012’s Avengers. The film was the MCU’s first superhero ensemble project, bringing together Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) to defend the Earth from an alien invasion. The Avengers was a box office success. In the end, the film brought in more than $1.5 billion and made the world aware that the MCU was there to stay.

Before taking on the role of Black Widow, Johansson presented Marvel with alternate options. According to The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making Of The Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor was also interested in two other characters, Wasp and Blonde Phantom. Though Marvel ultimately went with Johansson as Black Widow, the other characters present interesting alternatives. For example, as Wasp, Johansson’s role could’ve possibly included more humor. However, Blonde Phantom would’ve perhaps been an easier transition. After all, Black Widow made her debut in the MCU by pretending to be Tony Stark’s assistant. In Marvel’s comics, Blonde Phantom was a secretary who secretly assumed the role of a masked hero.

Marvel informed Scarlett Johansson of her MCU role in a somewhat unconventional fashion. As told in The Story of Marvel Studios, a production assistant handed Johansson a mysterious large object and told her it was her “next mission.” Johansson opened the package to find a pile of Black Widow comics and a detailed character history. There was also a garment bag with a SHIELD logo, which had a note saying, “We’ll see you on your next mission.” Black Widow’s stealth costume was inside the bag, and Johansson called the whole experience “an exciting proposition.” In many ways, the moment is perfect for Black Widow.

Marvel’s clandestine announcement couldn’t be better for Johansson’s character. Sure, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow has done a lot over her decade in the MCU. She’s fought on the Red Room as it fell from the sky in Black Widow, she helped take down the Black Order in Avengers: Infinity War, and she even sacrificed her life to save the universe in Avengers: Endgame. However, at her heart, Black Widow is a spy. Espionage and secrecy are always at the core of anything she does. By presenting Johansson with her role in a spy-like fashion, Marvel subtly set the tone for the actor’s entire MCU run.

The announcement also fits well with Marvel’s secrecy. Much like Black Widow, the MCU is all about keeping things close to its many-pocketed vest. Eternals actor Lauren Ridloff even said a man in a trench coat delivered her scripts. With Marvel already being discreet with its news and announcements, anything less than Johansson getting selected for a secret mission in The Avengers wouldn’t make sense.
