Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Masters of the Universe: Revelation season 1.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation subtly sets up a plot thread from the original Masters of the Universe animated series that was never fully developed; that the warrior woman Teela had a great destiny before her and was fated to become the next Sorceress of Castle Grayskull. The new series also teased that the current Sorceress is Teela’s mother — another piece of lore from the classic series that was never touched upon after it was first revealed.

The relationship between Teela and the Sorceress in the mythology of Masters of the Universe is convoluted. In the original backstory of the toy line, related through the mini-comics sold with each action figure, Teela was said to be a warrior goddess, who was responsible for giving He-Man his weapons and armor. A second-wave comic, “The Tale of Teela,” changed this, with Teela being revealed as a magical clone of the Goddess of Grayskull, whom the sorcerer Skeletor created hoping to claim her as his bride so he could use her as a tool to gain access to Castle Grayskull. The Goddess character later had her name changed to the Sorceress and the 1983 animated series affirmed that the Sorceress and Teela were different women. The animated series also revealed that the Sorceress had once been a woman named Teela Na, before taking up the responsibility of guarding Castle Grayskull.

Masters of the Universe: Revelation does not go into deep detail regarding the connection between Teela and the Sorceress, teasing the viewer with a story to tell but always having it cut off by some other occurrence. It seems likely that Teela’s destiny is being saved to be the focal point of Masters of the Universe season 2, given the series’ focus upon developing Teela as a character in the wake of the titular revelation that causes her to reconsider everything she thought she knew. While this plot point seems sure to satisfy fans of the original series, it also seems likely to confuse newcomers, who do not know Teela’s backstory from the original show.

“Teela’s Quest” in Masters of the Universe

How Masters of the Universe Revelation Sets Up Teelas Grayskull Destiny

The first hint that Teela was fated for great things came in the second episode of Masters of the Universe to air, “Teela’s Quest.” Written by Paul Dini (best known today as the co-creator of Harley Quinn) the episode found Teela, who was saddened by the fact that she had no memories of her mother, seeking out the Oracle of the Crystal Sea. This followed her asking her adoptive father Duncan (aka Men-At-Arms) for details of her birth parents, only to be told that her father was a great warrior who died before she was born and that her mother’s identity was a secret Duncan was sworn never to reveal.

After facing a number of perils, Teela found the Oracle and was told of how, twenty years earlier, Duncan had been summoned to the nest of Zoar the Falcon, where he discovered a baby girl. The Oracle said that the baby was the daughter of the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull (who could only leave the castle in the form of Zoar the Falcon) and how she had hoped to raise the girl safely in the mountains, but came to realized she could not. Duncan agreed to care for the baby as if she were his own, leading Teela to realize that she was the daughter of the Sorceress.

The Sorceress appeared and confirmed the Oracle’s story, further telling Teela that she would one day replace her as the guardian of Castle Grayskull’s secrets. The Sorceress then erased Teela’s memory of the Oracle’s story, leaving behind only the knowledge that her mother loved her very much, because “you have other deeds to do” before the day that she became the next Sorceress of Grayskull. This left only the Sorceress, Prince Adam, Cringer and Duncan knowing the secret of Teela’s past and her destiny.

How Revelation Teases Teela’s Fate

How Masters of the Universe Revelation Sets Up Teelas Grayskull Destiny

Every episode of Masters of the Universe: Revelation has a moment that references “Teela’s Quest” from the original Masters of the Universe. In the first episode, “The Power of Grayskull,” the Sorceress briefly slowed time after Skeletor destroyed the Orb of Power, allowing her a chance to talk to He-Man and Teela (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and tell them of the immediate danger to the universe thanks to Skeletor and his rash actions. When Teela asked what point there was to the Sorceress doing this if they were doomed, the Sorceress replied that she wanted to see Teela one last time. This comment confused Teela, but before she could ask why the Sorceress would want to see her, He-Man suggested a way he could use the Sword of Power to save the day and the cryptic comment was forgotten.

In the second episode of Revelation, “The Poisoned Chalice,” the Sorceress and Evil-Lyn tried to recruit Teela to lead the effort to reforge the shattered Sword of Power. Teela asked why she would want to do that given all the grief that magic had brought into her life, prompting the Sorceress to start to say “You have a special…” before Teela cut her off and said she was done with being a hero and being manipulated. In Masters of the Universe: Revelation, episode 3, “The Most Dangerous Man In Eternia,” Duncan attempted to tell Teela something after being reminded of his promise that there would be “no more secrets” between them, only to be stopped by Evil-Lyn, who said they didn’t have time to deal with any more family feuds. This built to the moment in Masters of the Universe: Revelation episode 4, “The Land of the Dead,” where Teela first manifested her magical powers and drove back the fear-empowered Scare Glow while summoning the dark half of the Sword of Power to her hand.

How Teela’s Destiny Ties Into Masters of the Universe Revelation Season 2

The grand irony of Masters of the Universe: Revelation is that it is Teela’s story, picking up the lost plot thread of “Teela’s Quest” and using it as the foundation for a new epic tale. While some have complained that the new series isn’t focused on continual battles between He-Man and Skeletor like the original, Masters of the Universe: Revelation builds upon what came before to answer questions that many of the children who grew up with the original Masters of the Universe have asked. Chief among these is why it was necessary for Prince Adam to have a secret identity in the first place and why, out of all the people he trusted, did he not tell his best friend and bodyguard, Teela, about his responsibilities as the champion of Castle Grayskull. As showrunner Kevin Smith noted in the early press regarding the show, the core idea of Revelation was sparked by his wondering how the head-strong and reactive Teela would respond if she learned that everyone in her life had been lying to her for years.

While the first part of Masters of the Universe: Revelation answers that question and reestablishes Teela’s status as a child of destiny, it also raises the stakes far beyond those of the original Masters of the Universe series. By the season’s end, Teela still had no idea of the great responsibility she had been raised to undertake, as Skeletor finally claimed the power of Grayskull for himself and seemingly killed Prince Adam a second time. Even if Adam was merely wounded, it seems likely that Teela will be leading the charge against Skeletor, though the question still remains as to how she will respond when she learns there is yet another secret that Adam, Duncan, and the Sorceress have hidden from her all her life. While it seems unlikely Teela will allow Eternia to burn or languish under Skeletor’s rule, it will be interesting to see if she accepts her destiny to become the next Sorceress or if she will find another way to oppose Skeletor without turning to the magic she rejected following her revelation.
