How Matthew McConaughey Got Cast in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4

One of Matthew McConaughey’s earliest roles came as a villain in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: The Next Generation, and here’s how he landed the part. Today, McConaughey is one of the biggest stars in the world, and sports a voice and mannerisms so recognizable that he’s a common subject of impersonations. He’s also an Oscar and Golden Globe winner, and an Emmy nominee. His “alright, alright, alright” catchphrase is said by millions. Yet, like most other big stars, his rise didn’t happen overnight, and his first few gigs weren’t necessarily prestigious.

While Vilmer in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: The Next Generation wasn’t McConaughey’s first film role, it was one of his first meatier parts, offering him a bit more to do than he’d been able to previously. It was also the first time audiences got to take in how good McConaughey is as a villain. McConaughey hasn’t played a bad guy many times, but when he does, it tends to be a standout performance.

To put it bluntly, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4 isn’t a good film. In fact, it’s pretty terrible. However, McConaughey is perhaps the only really good thing in it – with apologies to Renee Zellweger – as things liven up every time the wildly unhinged Vilmer is onscreen. So, how did he land the role? It turns out it took some doing.

How Matthew McConaughey Got Cast in Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4

Matthew McConaughey even being part of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4: The Next Generation was a case of good timing, as the actor had recently graduated from college, and was about to leave his native Texas for Los Angeles when he got a chance to audition for the slasher sequel. McConaughey was originally up for a smaller heroic role that ended up being excised from the final film entirely. After McConaughey auditioned for that part, director Kim Henkel asked him if he knew anyone who might be right for Vilmer. McConaughey suggested a couple of friends of his, and left.

Thankfully, before he could drive away, McConaughey had a “wait, what?” moment, went back in and asked if he could audition for Vilmer himself. Henkel said he could, then things got appropriately weird, considering how odd a character Vilmer is. Henkel gave McConaughey a spoon, told him to pretend it was a knife, and try to scare his secretary. During this, Henkel asked McConaughey to pretend that his mechanical leg brace was malfunctioning, as it does during the film. The director was so impressed with McConaughey’s unorthodox audition that he offered him the Vilmer role on the spot, and the rest is horror history.
