How MCUs Hawkeye Spinoff Can Bring Back Daredevils Kingpin

Marvel’s new Hawkeye spinoff show for Echo can bring back Daredevil’s Kingpin. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has largely ignored everything Marvel TV did between 2013 and 2020 despite fans calling for Agents of SHIELD and characters from Netflix’s Defenders shows to crossover. This was disappointing for viewers as the shows continued, but many are now seeing what could’ve been as Marvel Studios’ Disney+ shows directly connect to the MCU. Not only do these shows star people from the films, but they repeatedly bring in other movie characters.

There is a chance that this could change soon. Spider-Man: No Way Home is rumored to feature Charlie Cox as Daredevil again. It isn’t known if he’ll be the same version seen in all three seasons of Daredevil, but Marvel Studios appears to be utilizing a great casting choice and keeping it in the MCU one way or another. In addition to Cox’s return as Daredevil in a proper MCU project, there has long been a hope that Vincent D’Onofrio will play Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin again. Marvel Studios hasn’t announced any plans to bring him back, but that can change with the upcoming Hawkeye spinoff show.

Marvel Studios is in the early stages of development on a Disney+ show for Maya Lopez aka Echo. The character will make her MCU debut in Hawkeye, which now will setup Echo’s story to be explored in greater detail. Maya Lopez is a Native American deaf hero whose story is directly tied to Kingpin in the comics. Her origin story is tied to the death of her father, who will appear in Hawkeye in some form. The comics saw Kingpin raise Maya as his own daughter and train her to become a deadly assassin. When she was older, Kingpin told Maya that Daredevil was responsible for her father’s death. After Daredevil explained the truth and revealed Fisk’s deception, Maya temporarily blinded Kingpin and no longer worked for him.

Unless the MCU decides to change Echo’s story to remove a connection to Kingpin, he will need to appear in her Marvel Disney+ show. There are no signs that Kingpin will appear in Hawkeye, so Echo’s introduction could be more of an origin story for her. If her father dies at some point in Hawkeye, the spinoff series could be where Kingpin’s involvement in his death is revealed. This would allow the Echo-led series to show her training to go after her father’s supposed killer and become Kingpin’s adopted daughter before the truth is revealed.

While Marvel could cast a new actor to play Wilson Fisk in the MCU, Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin was one of the brightest spots of Marvel TV content. Marvel Studios would be smart to capitalize on this casting and bring D’Onofrio back for the Hawkeye spinoff series. This could play out the same way as Charlie Cox’s rumored Daredevil return, with D’Onofrio potentially playing a slightly different version of the character, so the MCU doesn’t have to worry about Netflix’s continuity. If this happens, and depending on how faithful Marvel is to the comics, there’s even a chance that the Hawkeye spinoff series could be a Daredevil reunion and include both Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin.
