How Minecraft 118 Makes Caves Safer Than The Overworld

The second half of Minecraft’s Caves & Cliffs update is currently available for players to try out thanks to the release of an experimental snapshot earlier this month. The snapshot introduces improved world generation as well as some of the new biomes eventually coming to Caves & Cliffs: Part 2. Another unexpected major change appeared in how Minecraft handles mob spawning, and as of the 1.18 snapshot, it appears that caves are now even safer than most overworld areas.

Caves & Cliffs was first revealed during Minecraft Live 2020, promising to bring drastically altered cave and mountain generation to the game along with several new mobs, items, and biomes. In April 2021 it was then announced that the update would be split into two parts, thanks largely to the technical difficulties of completely transforming Minecraft’s terrain generation systems. The first half of the update, Caves & Cliffs: Part 1 released in early June, with the second half currently set to come out sometime in the 2021 holiday season. Most of Part 1’s changes involved the addition of new mobs and blocks such as axolotls and amethyst.

The latest Minecraft snapshot is the first to feature Part 2’s major content updates, and the technical details of such a large change is part of why it was released in experimental form as opposed to being regularly available in the way that most Minecraft snapshots are. It became available to download on July 13 for both Java and Bedrock players. While the new world generation is arguably the most significant detail of the 1.18 Minecraft snapshot’s new content, another surprising change can be found in the details of how Minecraft monsters such as creepers and zombies now spawn.

1.18’s Minecraft Monsters Only Spawn In Complete Darkness

In previous versions of Minecraft, monsters would spawn anywhere that was considered dimly lit. This meant that even if a torch was placed on the ground, they could continue to spawn further out from the light source. As relatively well-lit areas could still be considered fair game for mob spawning, it lead to even the most advanced player bases in Minecraft being excessively covered in torches to help mitigate the risk. Caves were often viewed as particularly dangerous, as sharp corners or deep pits could result in monsters appearing despite Minecraft players’ best attempts to keep the area bright.

As of 1.18, though, monsters will only spawn in complete and total darkness. This was introduced to help make it safer to explore the much larger caves that will be introduced in Minecraft Caves & Cliffs: Part 2 – given that caves are enclosed areas, it’s much easier now for players to at least dimly light up every surface of an underground space. Comparatively, this could make Minecraft’s caves even safer than open overworld spaces. Complete darkness is arguably much easier to find in an open field at night than in a lighted underground cave, after all. Given that the 1.18 snapshot is still experimental, it’s unclear how the feature will be tweaked ahead of the official Caves & Cliffs: Part 2 release. For the moment, however, Minecraft players can enjoy the newfound relative safety of Minecraft’s cave systems.
