How Much Money YouTubers Are Making During Coronavirus Crisis

With coronavirus forcing more people to stay at home and video streaming services seeing massive increases in usage, it would be easy to assume that right now is a good time to be a YouTube content creator. However, that’s not quite true with most YouTubers feeling the effects of COVID-19 as much as everyone else.

Due to a lockdown order, many people are being forced to work from home and highly encouraged to stay at home in general. This hasn’t just affected how people work, but also directly impacted many industries, forcing companies to lay workers off (or furlough them), and just generally cut back where they can to ride out the reduction in business. However, there are some industries that appear to have benefited from the coronavirus outbreak, such as ISPs, video conferencing and chatting apps, social media services, and streaming services, including Netflix and YouTube.

When it comes to YouTube, the general consensus is that the pandemic has resulted in significantly more watch hours and views. As a result, it would be natural to assume that YouTuber revenue is also up, and considerably. After all, the more views you get, the more money you make. right? However, over the past few weeks it has become clear that’s not the case. While YouTube videos are getting more action and views, YouTubers are not reaping the benefits of those increased views in the same way they might have before, and this is largely the result of how online advertising works. A point clearly made recently by the YouTuber, SwankyBox. Although, there are plenty of YouTubers taking to social media to make similar points.

There’s a lot of struggles going on behind the scenes right now for your favorite content creators. Majority are seeing their livelihood tank just like every other job out there. This is the best way I can explain it. It will be a while before it gets better unfortunately. https://t.co/1IWTc2LYbi

More YouTube Views Doesn’t Mean More Money

One of the problems YouTubers now face is what’s known as ‘cost per thousand,’ or more commonly, ‘cost per mille’ (CPM). For reference, CPM is not just relevant to YouTubers, but to websites in general, and relates to the rate content creators are paid per 1,000 ad views. When advertising is healthy, CPM rates are high with advertisers outbidding each other for space. When advertising is less healthy, CPM rates can spiral. What’s important to understand is that healthy CPM rates are not just dependent on how many people are viewing, but the state of the advertising market in general. For example, right now the coronavirus outbreak has affected the advertising industry just like it has every other industry, forcing advertising and marketing companies to tighten their spending belts. With less advertisers spending less on advertising, there’s less competition for ad space, resulting in lower CPM rates. Due to this, a website or a YouTuber can get considerably more views, but still be paid much less. A real-world example of this effect can be seen in another recent YouTuber Tweet where Shesez explains that while one of his channel’s recent videos brought in 359,000 views, it generated “a full quarter LESS money” than a video from March 15 with only 200,000 views.

man is it THIS bad for any other youtubers right now? On March 15th I brought in 200k views and that is the day i earned the most amount of money (in the last 28 days). Last video brought in 359k and i am making a full quarter LESS money than i did on March 15th

In spite of a more recent video having almost twice as many views, it did not even generate the same amount of money, let alone more money. Again, the comments made by SwankyBox and Shesez are not random or unique cases, but symptomatic of the wider YouTube situation at the moment, as well as the online media and website industry as a whole. Just because platforms like YouTube are seeing increased views, that does not mean YouTubers are making more money. The reality is, most content creators are likely to be making considerably less than they did before everyone was subjected to a lockdown order. For some, the difference has resulted in the need to actually do more work to compensate for the difference, or to change tactics completely. For example, switching more to live-streaming and relying on the donations and tips provided by those who are tuning in and watching live. While this will help those YouTubers make up some of the difference, it further illustrates that no one, and no industry, is totally immune from the effects of coronavirus.
