Nick Fury is a man of many talents and has a stunning repertoire. The military colonel-turned-super spy is the founder of the Avengers and is the director of the extra-military anti-terrorism agency S.H.I.E.L.D. Though the MCU fandom only associates Samuel L. Jackson with the character of Fury, truth is, Marvel’s Nick Fury was an entirely different man when he was first introduced.

There are several different versions of Nick Fury who have existed in the Marvel universe, and though it’s a little overwhelming keeping tabs on all the timelines and narratives, it’s easy to infer that Fury has been a badass in all the timelines.

He might be very different from his original comic book counterpart, but his MCU fans are about to see a whole lot more of this version. Nick Fury is headed to Disney+ in a series that is inspired by the Secret Wars comic book storyline.

How Nick Fury Lost His Eye

For a lot of MCU fans, the big question is, “What happened to Nick Fury’s eye?” The story behind Fury’s lost vision is handled differently in the comics and the films. In the comic Fury loses his eye in a Nazi grenade blast. But in the MCU, Fury is sensitive about the subject of his eye and doesn’t want to talk about why he wears an eyepatch. It was revealed in Captain Marvel that he lost his eye when Goose scratched him. Goose is, of course, no ordinary cat, he is a Flerken which are fierce alien creatures resembling Earth cats. They have sectioned dimensions inside their bodies which allows them to protect objects. Though Fury doesn’t take the scratch seriously at first, it’s eventually revealed that he indeed loses his eye to Goose’s scratch.

Post-2002 Nick Fury Was Based On Samuel L. Jackson

There’s a reason why Samuel L. Jackson has that effortless swagger when he’s playing the role of Fury. As many Marvel comic fans would know, the original Nick Fury was a clean-shaven white man, with close-cropped hair and light scarring around the eyes. But when the character was bought back for the 2002 limited series comic book The Ultimates created by Bryan Hitch and Mark Millar, his looks and personality were based on Jackson. In fact, there is even a sequence in the comic when the Ultimates discuss who should play them in a movie based on their lives and Fury says, “Mr. Samuel L. Jackson, of course, no discussion.”

Nick Fury Speaks Multiple Languages

Since Marvel comics are initially written in English, it’s clear that the vast majority of their characters speak the language. When so many characters do undercover work for superheroes or run spy groups like Fury, they tend to speak a variety of other languages as well.

In the comics, Fury speaks Japanese, German, and Russian at the very least. It’s entirely possible he’s picked up a few other languages in his travels.

His Comic Storylines Inspired Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Because Nick Fury isn’t one of the costumed Avengers in the MCU, a lot of his comic book storylines don’t make it into the movies. They have, however, inspired Marvel’s TV arm in shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. When Fury, for example, discovers that Hydra has been controlling S.H.I.E.L.D., he’s got a volume of comic book issues that reference “Nick Fury: Agent of Nothing” as he scrambles to find allies from within the organization. The same storyline played out for Phil Coulson in the first and second seasons of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Likewise, it’s Fury who forms the Secret Warriors and mentors Daisy Johnson in the comics, but it’s Coulson who gets the job on TV.

George Clooney Almost Played Nick Fury

Many fans don’t know this but George Clooney was keen to take on the role of Fury in Marvel films. He closely matches the physical description of the original Fury but apparently, Clooney was taken aback by the goriness of the character and Garth Ennis’ treatment of Fury.

According to Business Insider, Clooney backed out after he read Ennis’ 2001 six-issue comic mini-series titled Fury where the super spy chokes a soldier out with his intestines! Interestingly, that same year the plan for The Ultimates was conceived by Bryan Hitch and Mark Millar which would feature a Fury based on Jackson.

Does Nick Fury Age?

Nick Fury has been the pillar for all the MCU phases, the veteran spy spent a quarter of a century recruiting superheroes and has fought alongside everyone from Captain America to Captain Marvel, which begs the question, how old is Fury? He must have been 17 or 18 when he went off to serve in the Second World War, so he was obviously born in the 1900s, but it’s impossible to know his age because of the Infinity Formula invented by Professor Sternberg which is a drug which slows down aging substantially. He first used it in France when he was injured during the war, but it has to be introduced in his system every year to slow his aging.

He’s A Martial Arts Master

To no one’s surprise, Fury is trained in some of the most prolific forms of martial arts and other physical combatting styles. Not only is he a heavyweight boxer who was trained during World War II, but he is also a champion in unarmed combat, which makes him significantly tougher than some of the Avengers. Moreover, Fury has been in the Korean and Vietnam wars and he’s essentially a combat expert. He also holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and Jiu-Jitsu. It was also revealed that he was also trained as a Ranger, a vehicle specialist, and a Green Beret!

Nick Fury And Captain America Fought Over A Woman

It’s hard to imagine this but Fury and Steve Rogers once competed for a woman’s affection. Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine was an international spy who was first introduced in Jim Steranko’s 1967 issue of the Marvel comic anthology Strange Tales. She and Fury hit it off really well and she quickly became his romantic interest; in fact, a certain flirty one-pager panel had to be edited on one of the issues of the anthology as Comics Code Authority found it too racy. Fontaine also had a brief temporary fling with Rogers, and the Cap and Fury silently competed against each other. But it was later discovered that Fontaine was actually a Skrull in disguise! The character has been introduced to the MCU, played by Julia Luis-Dreyfus, but without the same backstory.

He Actually Worked With Red Skull

It’s obvious that Fury has been part of a number of shady conspiracies over the years. And though some of his past collaborations have confused the Marvel fandom, one of his weirdest moments in comic book history is when Fury actually joined hands with the super evil and scary Red Skull, aka Johann Schmidt.

Schmidt is not just one of the most crafty supervillains but also Cap’s biggest nemesis. The one-time head of HYDRA had also been a close confidante of Hitler and had even dabbled in the occult. But Fury’s one-time alliance with the Red Skull caused a rift between him and Cap.

Samuel L. Jackson Isn’t As Good At Keeping Marvel Secrets As Nick Fury

Nick Fury may be a master keeper of secrets but Samuel L. Jackson was once at the center of a potentially huge marvel movie leak. During the shooting of the very first The Avengers in 2011, Jackson’s personal copy of the script fell in the hands of someone who photocopied it digitally and leaked it online. Not only this, but the unnamed leaker also tried to sell the script online to the highest bidder.

David Hasselhoff Played Nick Fury In A TV Movie

Most fans don’t remember this but none other than Baywatch star David Hasselhof played the role of Nick Fury in the 1998 TV movie Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. The film was based on the comic book series of the same name and also featured Days of our Lives star Lisa Rinna. The film’s plot focuses on a retired Nick Fury who has to resume his professional duties to stop HYDRA from attacking New York with a deadly pathogen.

He Once Teamed Up With A HYDRA Leader’s Daughter

It’s not surprising but Nick Fury has been with some really famous women with serious cred. One of them is Laura Brown who is the daughter of HYDRA leader Arnold Brown. Although she was Brown’s daughter, she could never really understand her father’s plans for world domination. In issue 139 of Strange Tales, she saved Nick Fury’s life when he was captured by HYDRA and helped him escape. Fury and Laura became really close allies, despite their backgrounds. In fact, when Arnold was murdered, Fury let Laura escape so she wouldn’t have to face criminal charges and even tried to get her amnesty.
