How Nickelodeon AllStar Brawls Fighting Mechanics Will Work

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is coming out soon, bringing with it a blend of familiar and unique fighting mechanics. Announced back in July, the new platform fighter will see players take on the role of iconic Nickelodeon characters in a Super Smash Bros-like battle to the finish. The game has generated a good amount of buzz from fans who are eager to dish out punishment using the characters of their childhood cartoons.

Leading up to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s release, GameMill Entertainment has been showing off a bunch of footage to keep fans excited. This footage has shown off a variety of features, ranging from highlights of the movesets of multiple characters to full-blown matches in some of the Nickelodeon locations the game will include. One such video gave fans a more in-depth look at the gameplay overall, showing how fights would play out in a given match on a mechanical level.

The main objective of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s competitive matches is to “ring out” an opponent, effectively sending them out of the fighting stage by knocking them skyward, sideways or downward. Ringing out an opponent is tied to their damage percentage number, which is built up by attacking them throughout the match. If an enemy’s percentage is low, their knockback distance is going to be very slight; the higher the percentage builds up, the farther an opponent will go flying.

Attacking, Defending, & Movement In Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl

All of Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s characters will be able to perform Light, Strong, and Special attacks as the match progresses, and each will be available in three different directions: Up, Mid, and Down. Strong attacks are of special note because of the way they interact with one another: Strong Up attacks beat Strong Downs and cause enemies to spin out, Strong Mids beat Strong Ups and causes a turnaround, and Strong Downs beat Strong Mids and cause a stagger effect. All of these attacks can be performed in the air as well, allowing for a variety of attacks in different situations. Players will also be able to perform Dash Light/Strong attacks after building up enough speed on the ground, and these can be cancelled immediately on hit to lead into any other attack.

There’s also a Grab system that allows Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl’s characters to pick up opponents and throw them in any given direction while on the ground or in the air. Grabs can be performed while jumping, and characters will be able to move around and perform jumps while holding their opponent. Looking at defensive measures, players will be able to Guard themselves as long as they see fit, and can even perform a Perfect Guard that allows them to respond with an attack immediately. Characters will be able to utilize projectiles to attack enemies at range, and these can be defended against by using a Strong attack to reflect it back toward an opponent, or by grabbing and throwing the projectile itself.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl will also feature a dedicated Strafe button that prevents a character from turning around, allowing for retreating attacks that help create distance from an opponent. Players will also be equipped with the ability to Air Dash and Downward Dash, which are actionable into any attack after using them. Downward Dash stands out by allowing players to Waveland/Wavedash, which are advanced movement techniques utilized in Super Smash Bros. Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl seems to be blending traditional fighting mechanics with some new levels of strategy, giving it the potential to hook fans of fighting games for many battles to come.
