How Ninja Gaiden Blacks Lost Source Code Will Affect The Master Collection

The 3D Ninja Gaiden games became some of the most beloved action-adventure titles on the original Xbox and the Xbox 360. Its fast-paced action and unforgiving difficulty established an iconic legacy many gamers still talk about today. It’s no surprise many fans felt a wave of excitement wash over them after Team Ninja announced a Ninja Gaiden Master Collection earlier this year. Although gamers have a lot to look forward to with the upcoming remasters, it might not be exactly what they are expecting.

Team Ninja recently confessed that it lost the source code for Ninja Gaiden Black and Ninja Gaiden 2, forcing the company to use the Sigma rereleases for the PlayStation 3. It’s a hard pill to swallow for Ninja Gaiden fans since Black and Ninja Gaiden II are regarded as the definitive versions of the first two games.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Sigma II aren’t as cherished as Black and the original sequel. Many fans believe the games were easier than their predecessors and didn’t enjoy the subtle changes made in the PlayStation 3 versions. One of Ninja Gaiden Black’s biggest draws was the additional difficulty modes for advanced players. Despite Sigma and Sigma II’s lukewarm response from hardcore fans, it might be the only option for gamers looking to relive the iconic trilogy.

The exclusion of Ninja Gaiden II and Black means the Master Collection will be less graphic than the original trilogy. Sigma II replaced most of the blood effects with purple smoke, rubbing some Ninja Gaiden purist the wrong way. The multiplayer will also be absent from the Master Collection due to resource constraints and lack of funds. Team Ninja explains that it rather the resources go towards a multiplatform release than revitalizing the multiplayer.

The lost source codes highlight the importance of video game preservation. More games are starting to fall into obscurity as the industry moves into the digital age. It’s likely that Team Ninja didn’t take the necessary steps in preserving the games since it wasn’t prevalent during that day in age. The lost source code should be a violent wake-up call to the industry, shedding much-needed light on the industry’s lackluster response to game preservation.

Despite the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection lacking arguably the best two games in the series, it will still give players the high octane experience the franchise is known for. Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Sigma II are still fantastic games despite the controversial changes. The Ninja Gaiden Master Collection might not feature Sigma’s multiplayer or be as bloody as fans remember, but it will encapsulate everything fans know and love from the original trilogy.
