How Once Upon A Time In Hollywood Referenced Tarantinos Death Proof

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood included various references to other films by Quentin Tarantino, including two subtle ones related to Death Proof. Following the steps of his 2009 film Inglourious Basterds, which told an alternate version of World War II, Tarantino brought Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, which took events from the late 1960s and gave them a twist.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood told the story of Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his best friend and stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) who had worked together for years, but as Hollywood’s golden age neared its end, so did their careers. As Rick and Cliff struggled to remain active and relevant in the entertainment business, the film also showed a bit of the life of Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) and gave her a very different ending. Of course, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood featured a couple of frequent collaborators of Tarantino, such as Kurt Russell and Zoë Bell.

Even though Russell was one of the names included in the marketing for the film, he and Bell were cast in minor roles and their scenes were brief, but their characters are a subtle yet fun reference to another film by Tarantino.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’s Death Proof Reference

When Cliff is fixing Rick’s TV antenna, he stops and reminisces about his time as stuntman on the set of The Green Hornet. There he comes across with Randy Miller (Kurt Russell), the stunt coordinator, who hesitates about hiring him and ends up doing so after Rick asks him to give him a chance. After a sparring contest with Bruce Lee (Mike Moh), Cliff is fired by Randy and his wife Janet (Zoë Bell), also a stunt coordinator and one that didn’t like Cliff as she was sure he killed his wife. Russell and Bell’s characters both being stunt coordinators is a reference to the 2007 film Death Proof, as well as to Bell’s career and previous work with Tarantino.

In Death Proof, Russell played Stuntman Mike, a man who murdered young women in staged car accidents with the help of his “death-proof” stunt car, which kept him safe. Zoë Bell also appeared in Death Proof playing a different version of herself, so her role as Janet Randy is also a reference to the film but also to her career as stuntwoman. Bell was Uma Thurman’s stunt double in Kill Bill: Volume 1 and Volume 2, as well as Mélanie Laurent and Diana Kruger’s stunt double in Inglourious Basterds. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is packed with little details like these referencing past Tarantino movies, and it also has a lot of foreshadowing, which definitely make it worth a rewatch.
