How Resident Evil Village Will Likely Influence the Rumored RE4 Remake

Capcom is currently basking in the success of its most recent release, Resident Evil Village. The eighth mainline Resident Evil game is now the fastest-selling game in the franchise. Resident Evil Village is also the most confident entry in the series, and a lot of it is because of how it tries to recapitulate the high points of Resident Evil 4.

Interestingly, the tides may have turned now with Resident Evil Village influencing the development of the rumored RE4 Remake. Even though multiple sources have claimed its existence, not much is known about this upcoming remake. While Capcom is clearly not ready to talk about this project right now, RE Village is enough to provide a faint picture of what an RE4 Remake could look like.

Visual and Performance Similarities

Both Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4 take place in a remote European village with a gothic castle looming in the background. Some of the early village areas are even a callback to the Resident Evil 4. It’s no surprise that game development is an iterative process, and Capcom could end up using the RE Village assets to recreate the village in RE4 Remake, assuming that the latter uses the same RE Engine. Few of the NPCs players meet early on in Resident Evil Village may also be a nod to the villagers from RE4 and could end up being the baseline for those characters in the upcoming remake.

Resident Evil Village is one of the prettiest-looking games available on the next-gen consoles. All of this is thanks to Capcom’s powerful proprietary RE Engine that it uses to develop all of its games. RE Engine is especially good at rendering highly detailed character models and life-like interiors though it falls a bit short when it comes to exterior environments. The interiors of the Dimitrescu castle look breathtaking, especially with raytracing enabled. The Salazar Castle in RE 4 Remake could look no different, if not better.

Resident Evil Village is an incredibly polished game, even on the last-gen consoles. The PS5 and Xbox Series X version of the game targets 4K HDR and up to 45 FPS with raytracing enabled though manages to hit a constant 60 most of the time. On the other hand, the base PS4 and Xbox One version of the game targets 900p resolution at 45 and 30 FPS on respective consoles. If RE4 Remake turns out to be a cross-gen title, fans could expect a similar performance range.

Gameplay Attributes

How Resident Evil Village Will Likely Influence the Rumored RE4 Remake

Resident Evil games have long abandoned the tank-like controls of the original and feel much more refined third-person and first-person shooter experiences. RE2 and RE3 Remake are a perfect indication of what an RE4 Remake could play and feel like though there could also be several influences straight from RE Village.

Resident Evil Village evolved the crafting mechanic introduced in Resident Evil 7 to a great degree. Crafting could return in the upcoming remake in a more refined way. RE Village also brought back the attaché-shaped inventory which is more than likely to return in RE4 Remake. There could also be more subtle gameplay tweaks like hunting from Resident Evil Village. In the original Resident Evil 4, players could hunt fish though they couldn’t be crafted into an attribute enhancing meal like in Resident Evil Village. There is a possibility that RE4 Remake retains this feature.

Ada Wong

Everyone who has played Resident Evil 4 knows how integral Ada Wong’s character is to the game. Many might wonder how Wong would look like in the upcoming remake though this isn’t a mystery anymore. The recent concept art from Resident Evil Village confirms that Wong was supposed to be a part of the game but was later cut due to multiple reasons. While there are plenty of pros and cons of Ada Wong skipping RE Village, it does give fans the first look at how Wong’s character model could like in the upcoming RE4 Remake.

At this point, Resident Evil 4 Remake is still largely a mystery. With Capcom’s E3 2021 showcase confirmed for June 14, though, fans may not have to wait much longer.

Resident Evil Village is now available on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
