How Saving Hopes Season 5 Finale Ended The Show

Here’s how Saving Hope ended on a memorable note with its emotional season 5 finale, “Hope Never Dies.” Canadian series Saving Hope was a medical drama with a difference. While its main characters Alex Reid (Smallville’s Erica Durance) and Charlie Harris (Stargate SG-1’s Michael Shanks) were doctors, the latter spent the first season of the show in a coma that left him stuck in supernatural limbo and able to communicate with the spirits of dead and fellow comatose patients.

Unfortunately for the Saving Hope fandom, the show came to an end after five seasons in 2017. On the upside, the cast and crew had plenty of forewarning Saving Hope season 5 would be the show’s last hurrah and so crafted a touching series finale that tied up a lot of loose ends and offered many a tearjerker moment. As for whether the show had a happy ending or not is debatable. If an ending that’s happy and sad in equal measure is what the show was going for, then the medical drama nailed its series finale.

The good news about the Saving Hope season 5 finale was that it saw a very pregnant Alex and Charlie finally tie the knot in a makeshift wedding ceremony at the Hope Zion Hospital. The bad news about “Hope Never Dies” is that while the newlywed couple were en route to their honeymoon with their little boy Luke in tow, their colleague Zach (Benjamin Ayres, Suits) requested they attend the scene of a pile-up involving a van full of schoolkids until ambulances could get there.

Being doctors, they complied but it proved to be a fateful choice when their car was t-boned by an oncoming vehicle. Although all three were injured Alex, her unborn baby and little Luke were okay eventually but the prognosis wasn’t good for Charlie, who found himself back in supernatural limbo as his life hung in the balance. Sadly, a severe head injury left Charlie brain-dead but before he dies spirit Charlie has a flash-forward in which he meets he and Alex’s grown-up daughter – who is a doctor like her parents and named Charlotte after her father – and learns an adult Luke is getting married. In another vision spirit, Charlie witnesses a much older Charlotte and Luke by an elderly Alex’s bedside as she is about to die.

Back in the present, spirit Charlie physically manifests in front of Alex and tells her their kids are going to be fine before they share an emotional farewell and Alex arranges for Charlie’s organs to be donated to those in need. As if enough tears weren’t shed already, the Saving Hope season 5 finale ended with a scene set on a beach – Alex and Charlie’s version of heaven – where the two were finally reunited in death.
