How Scenes From A Marriage Proves Oscar Isaac Is Perfect For Moon Knight

Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac showcase top-tier acting prowess in Scenes From a Marriage, and many of the show’s moments prove that the latter actor is perfect to play the Marvel character of Moon Knight. Based on the 1973 Swedish miniseries of the same name, the HBO project is still in progress, with new episodes dropping weekly. It chronicles a modern-day couple—Mira and Jonathan—who are middle-aged partners a decade into their marriage. Intimate, raw, and unflinching, the drama offers a glimpse into the present dynamic, romantic history, personalities, and turmoil of its two main characters.

When the show opens, they seem generally happy together. Sure, there’s clear tension bubbling beneath the surface (especially for Mira) right from Scenes From a Marriage’s opening scene. However, they seem to be a solid team and truly care for one another. But when an unplanned pregnancy – which is ultimately terminated – causes them both immense pain and shakes the foundation of their relationship early in the series, things are irreversibly thrown off course. The marriage slowly begins to deteriorate, only intensified by a seeming lack of communication and solitary dealings with grief and anger.

As far as Isaac’s Jonathan goes, his character’s sense of loss and betrayal transcends the screen. Even in happier moments, where he’s more confident and at ease, the performance is nothing short of impressive. Oscar Isaac’s role in Scenes From a Marriage makes his upcoming part as the titular character of Marvel’s Moon Knight in a Disney+ series all the more promising. The show is set to drop in 2022, and he’s been confirmed as Marc Spector – AKA Moon Knight – a mercenary who lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder and wields the power of the moon. The part is quite the undertaking, but his intense and emotionally nuanced portrayal of Jonathan shows that he can offer the same kind of careful handling with Spector.

After all, turmoil abounds in the HBO show. Both main characters have their own demons and character flaws that negatively affect the increasingly bleak-seeming relationship. But, especially after Mira’s infidelity is revealed and speeds up the unraveling, Jonathan’s character—in particular—really stands out. In episode 2, “Poli,” of Scenes From a Marriage, his suffering in the aftermath of the revelation is more focused on—and it’s devastatingly sad. Though the partnership is two-sided and complicated, his character is presented as far more likable and sympathy-eliciting in these moments. Blindsided by the couple’s newest life bombshell, Isaac brilliantly toggles between shock, heartbreak, anger, disgust, and desperation. As a viewer, it’s a tense and painful watch.

Isaac truly inhabits Jonathan’s deeply wounded character; he actually becomes a family man who is completely blindsided and stunned as the life he believed to have is slipping through his fingers more and more by the minute. He plays the thoughtful and sensitive character beautifully, and that same kind of skill will surely transfer over to Moon Knight – a character with his own unique demons and turmoil. The Marvel superhero tone will be a definite contrast to a relationship-focused show like Scenes From a Marriage, and will require more physicality and brutality on Isaac’s part. But, either way, his performance in that series is sure to be equally realistic, memorable, and nuanced.
