How Shuri’s New MCU Story Sets Up Iron Man’s Replacement

Shuri’s story in Marvel’s What If…? episode 6 sets up Iron Man being replaced in Phase 4 of the MCU. Shuri, who has been regarded as one of the greatest minds in the MCU, isn’t going to be suiting up as the Armored Avenger, but does stand a chance at filling an important void left by the character.

Though her impressive intellect gives her something in common with the fallen hero who sacrificed himself in Avengers: Endgame, it’s expected by most that Shuri (Letitia Wright) will instead be forced to take up the mantle of her brother in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While she’s sure to be involved in what comes next for Wakanda, there’s a good chance that she’ll have a role to play of some kind in Marvel’s plans for Iron Man’s legacy in Phase 4.

The ending of Marvel’s What If…? episode 6 hints at how Shuri could take Iron Man’s place in the main timeline. In the aftermath of Killmonger succeeding T’Challa as the Black Panther, Shuri popped up in Stark’s office, presumably as the one person who wasn’t taken in by Killmonger’s ruse. It seems she’ll be forming an alliance with Pepper Potts and Stark Industries to dethrone him. Shuri, who is even younger in What If…? than she is in Black Panther, displayed a remarkable degree of intelligence in figuring out Killmonger’s deception (and obtaining evidence against him). The episode solidifies Shuri’s spot as the smartest hero in the MCU in the absence of Tony Stark. The only one who might rival Shuri is Hank Pym.

Shuri being the Earth’s top genius and getting access to Stark Industries’ resources via Pepper Potts in an alternate timeline raises questions about the likelihood of this happening in the main timeline. Circumstances are different of course, but just like the scenario shown in the episode, Tony Stark is dead, and the MCU could use someone with his brainpower right now. Similar to her decision in the show to reach out to Stark Industries, Letitia Wright’s Shuri doesn’t have to be limited to Wakanda in the MCU. Her role could easily expand beyond the country’s borders, with her offering help to Earth’s heroes in the same way that Iron Man did.

One such character who could be in need of guidance from Shuri is Ironheart aka Riri Williams (Dominque Thorne), who is set to make her MCU debut in Black Panther 2. Based on her name and comic connections, it’s been assumed that Riri will be Tony Stark’s Iron Man successor. In the comic books, Tony was able to serve as a mentor figure for her, but obviously that isn’t on the table for her character in Black Panther 2 or Ironheart. But if Marvel’s What If…? episode 6 is any indication, Shuri may be in the best position to help pass the baton to Riri and provide the MCU with a proper Iron Man replacement.
