How Sora Is Different From Other Smash Bros Sword Fighters

Sora will join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the game’s final DLC character, completing a roster of 89 different fighters. Wielding his iconic Keyblade from the Kingdom Hearts series, Sora will also join Smash Ultimate’s large subcategory of sword fighter characters. Still, Sora has many qualities that set him apart from other sword-wielders on the roster.

The joke of Smash Bros. having too many sword fighters has persisted for many years now. Indeed, Sora’s inclusion in Smash Ultimate brings the total number of characters who fight primarily with a sword to 20. Still, Sora moves and fights in a much different way compared to the game’s other sword fighters, and has techniques beyond just his Keyblade. These unique attributes help to contrast Sora’s playstyle with the familiar gameplay of other Smash sword fighters.

As shown in Sora’s character showcase on Nintendo’s YouTube channel, Sora does not share some of the qualities associated with Smash Ultimate’s other sword fighters. Rather than landing singular, powerful hits similar to Ike, Sora can perform three-hit combos with neutral and tilt attacks both on the ground and in the air. While swordsmen like Link are especially heavy, Sora has a lighter weight than even Isabelle, making him more agile and easier to launch. Even Sora’s counterattack ability, a technique shared by 9 other sword fighters, works uniquely: Not only does Sora’s counter make foes stagger backward, it can also deflect projectiles to hit foes behind him.

Sora Has Incredible Recovery Potential for a Sword Fighter In Smash Bros.

Of all the sword fighter characters in Smash Ultimate, Sora with his Keyblade may have the best recovery options. When characters like Chrom or Cloud are knocked offstage, their attempts to recover are largely limited to linear, vertical movement. Sora, by contrast, has a much greater range of motion. Sora’s Up-Special executes a spin that elevates him into the air, and his Side-Special allows him to lunge through the air three times in whichever direction the player chooses. Sora can use his moves in Smash in conjunction with one another to recover even when he has ventured far from the stage, something not all sword characters can do.

Even Sora’s magical abilities work differently than those of other sword characters. Just like Robin and Hero, Sora can complement his swordplay with magical attacks by utilizing his Neutral-Special. However, while Robin’s tomes can be overused and Hero’s MP can be depleted, Sora’s magic can be fired continually, cycling across three spells each time players press the button. This mechanic gives Sora a reliable ranged attack, while other characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are limited to simply swordplay.
