Sam Wilson has had an interesting career as a hero. Best known as the Falcon, Wilson has also been Captain America, both in the comics and in the MCU. For a long time, he was one of comics’ premiere sidekicks but he definitely came into his own, making a name for himself as both Falcon and Captain America. Over the years, he’s had all kinds of amazing adventures with a variety of heroes, proving just how great he can be.

Because of the MCU version of the character, movie fans have a lot of questions about Sam. Sam’s popularity growth has made him a big deal again and sometimes, it’s easier to ask questions than reading decades of comics.

10 How Strong Is Sam? As Strong As Any Other Human In Great Physical Shape

Sam Wilson had some big shoes to fill when he became Captain America and the lack of super-soldier serum made things tougher for him. Cap’s super-soldier serum gave him low-level super strength and agility, which made things easier for him. Falcon didn’t have these advantages at all but he was no slouch when it came to strength.

He’s used this to communicate with his falcon Redwing, allowing him the ability to use Redwing for intel gathering purposes.

He got this power from Red Skull, who used the Cosmic Cube to give it to him. For years it was thought Falcon might be a mutant but this wasn’t the case and his avian telepathic abilities have fallen to the wayside over the years.

The reveal of Sam’s Captain America costume in the MCU was a big deal in The Falcon And The Winter Soldier and the costume was pretty much exactly the same one Sam wore in the later stages of his career as Captain America in the comics. This similarity may have some fans wondering if the Wakandans created the costume in the comics as well.

They did not but they did give him one of his first Falcon costume. Sam eventually changed his first Captain America suit to the second one that is familiar to MCU fans on his own. He almost certainly designed it himself and it remains one of his coolest costumes.

7 Did He Always His Wings? No, He Didn’t

The Wakandans may not have given Sam either of his Cap costumes but they did give him a Falcon costume. They gave him the winged one, as when Sam first appeared as Falcon, he was pretty much just a guy who liked birds and had a pet falcon, so he called himself Falcon.

Eventually, Black Panther would take notice of Captain America’s new protege and gift him a high-tech costume that allowed Sam to fly with the birds he loved so much. He may have been called the Falcon before but he wasn’t truly the Falcon until he got this costume.

Red Skull had pretty much made the whole thing up, using the Cosmic Cube to make it a reality. Sam was never a drug dealer, it was just Red Skull being a terrible person and the hidebound attitudes of Marvel creators in the late ’60s.

5 How Close Are Winter Soldier And Sam In The Comics? Close But Not Like In The MCU

Sam and Bucky in the MCU are very close friends and work well together. They both lost a friend when Steve went away and so the two turned to each other eventually. Their relationship will make MCU fans wonder how well they get along in the comics.

The answer to that is that they are close but not like in the MCU. They never worked together nearly as much and while they share being Captain America, the two men had very different things going on while they were Cap and rarely got a chance to hang out with each other. So, they’re friends but don’t have the brotherly bond of the MCU.

4 Did He Have His Own Sidekicks When He Was Captain America? Yes, He Did

Captain America has always been known for taking on sidekicks, from Bucky to Rick Jones to the Falcon himself. When Bucky became Captain America, he didn’t really have a sidekick but Sam was different. He not only worked with Misty Knight and several other black heroes, but he also had his own version of the Falcon, Joaquin Torres.

Unlike Sam, Joaquin didn’t need a special suit to fly, as he was made into a human/falcon hybrid by the evil Dr. Karl Malus. Sam showed the young hero the ropes, much like Cap did with him, keeping the Captain America legacy of teaching the inexperienced alive.

3 Did Sam Ever Lead The Avengers As Captain America? Yes, Both The Uncanny Avengers And The Regular Team

Captain America is synonymous with being the leader of the Avengers and so when Sam became the new Captain America, he stepped up. At first, he led the Uncanny Avengers, known as the Unity Squad, even leading them to victory against Ultron. Later, he’d take over the regular Avengers team, with him, Iron Man, the Vision, and Jane Foster as Thor joining up with Nova, Ms. Marvel, and Miles Morales.

Sam proved to be a great leader of the Avengers. This made sense, since he had been with the team for ages and paid attention to his mentor’s lessons well over the years.

2 Why Did Sam Stop Being Captain America? He Lost Faith In America And The Real Steve Rogers Eventually Returned

Sam joined the ranks of sidekicks who became A-listers when he took on the mantle of Captain America but it didn’t last. Sam’s time as Cap, especially the latter days of it, was heaped with scandal as the more racist members of the public turned against him and Hydra Cap started to speak out against him. The last straw was his friend Rage being wrongfully convicted of robbery and beaten in prison.

During Secret Empire, Sam helped fight Hydra but didn’t take up the shield again until late in the battle. With the return of the non-Hydra Steve Rogers, Sam stepped down, although he has joined up with Steve and Bucky as Captains America in The United States Of Captain America.

1 Are MCU Sam And Comic Sam Similar? Not Very, Actually

The MCU can be very different from the comics and nowhere is that more apparent than with Sam Wilson. Comic Sam and MCU Sam have a lot of fundamental differences beginning with MCU’s Sam’s military service. Comic Sam was never in the military and unlike MCU Sam, he’s from Harlem, not New Orleans.

Beyond that, Falcon has worked for SHIELD but never with the military, never carried guns, and had an actual falcon as a pet. He’s also not nearly as quippy as the MCU version and was in a relationship with Jane Foster while she was Thor. Comic Sam is a very different person than his MCU counterpart.
