How Stu Can Return And Be Reformed In Scream 5

Scream 5 offers a great opportunity for Matthew Lillard’s Stu Macher to return, this time not as one of the slasher series’ most memorable villains, but as a reformed man. Directed by franchise newcomers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet, the fifth installment will both relaunch the meta-horror series and act as a direct sequel to 2011’s Scream 4. Legacy characters Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox), Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Judy Hicks (Marley Shelton) will join a host of cast newcomers.

The first film was released in 1996 and directed by “Master of Horror” Wes Craven, who tragically passed away in 2015. Scream follows the teenage Sidney and her friends as a masked killer with a dangerous love of horror movies stalks the streets of Woodsboro. The erratic Stu was revealed as the accomplice of Billy Loomis, a.k.a. Ghostface (Skeet Ulrich), Sidney’s sadistic boyfriend, and appeared to perish at the hands of Sidney, although Lillard claims the character is still alive.

Stu was originally meant to return in Scream 3, orchestrating a new wave of killings from prison, before the Columbine High School massacre prompted massive script rewrites. The plot of Scream 5 is currently a mystery but if the filmmakers want to bring the series full circle, and possibly end Sidney’s journey, Stu’s return would be a great way to demonstrate how these characters have evolved. However, if he does return, Stu could instead be a reformed man trying to escape his past, ready to offer insight regarding the new murders plaguing Woodsboro.

In the original Scream, Stu was stabbed twice before having a television dropped on his head, but he was never definitively confirmed dead. Scream 5 set photos have already teased a return to Stu’s house, making a reunion between Sidney and one of her first attackers entirely possible. However, Stu may not be the same person he was over 20 years ago. Bringing him back as the villain would be an easy solution, but a reformed ex-convict who feels remorse for his actions would provide a classic case of misdirection befitting the series. Stu could appear in a prison-set cameo, like Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs, but having him released and trying to live a normal life would finally give Stu a deeper storyline. After all, Stu never had a clear motive in the original Scream, telling Sidney his excuse was “peer pressure.” He, too, was manipulated by Billy, thereby drawing a connection to Sidney yet to be explored.

Everyone would suspect Stu is the Ghostface killer, but what if he is equally scared? The new killer(s) could force him to face up to his horrific past, allowing Scream 5 to clarify exactly why he was driven to murder while making him a target to be framed or killed. His return would generate a huge reaction from legacy characters and Woodsboro’s townspeople would never welcome him back with open arms. Nonetheless, his past as a killer means he could have information to offer on how the new Ghostface may approach their crimes, providing a dark twist on Randy Meeks’ (Jamie Kennedy) role in the first three films, in which he revealed Scream’s rules for surviving a horror movie. Stu could warn the group of what mistakes to avoid, either through reluctance, self-preservation, or a genuine desire to prove he is reformed.

Redemption isn’t possible for Stu, and Sidney and her friends would never trust him. However, proving everyone wrong and demonstrating his innocence of the current murders holds potential for a shocking resolution. Scream 5 needs to say something new about these characters and the horror genre, and a reformed killer facing their past could provide a thrilling mirror to Sidney’s story.
