The Cloverfield Paradox reshaped the previous movies in the franchise, as well as the next film: the World War II-set Overlord aka Cloverfield 4.

The Cloverfield Paradox wraps up the trilogy that began in 2008, but it also sets up future Cloverfield stories which can expand upon its series-defining revelations. Indeed, the fourth film in the franchise, currently codenamed Overlord, is already finished and scheduled for release sometime in 2018.
According to an early synopsis, Cloverfield 4 will be set in the midst of World War II and follow a squad of allied soldiers who uncover supernatural phenomena in a Nazi-occupied village. After The Cloverfield Paradox, we know a lot more about how this sort-of-shared universe operates, and with it potentially some important aspects of Overlord.

The Paradox Sends Monsters Across Dimensions – And Time
The particle accelerator incident depicted in The Cloverfield Paradox is the central catalyst which creates the events of all previous Cloverfield movies, opening up rifts in time and space, distorting reality and dragging monsters from across alternate dimensions. It rips holes in the space-time continuum, meaning the results of the inter-dimensional damage are not limited to the present day; the accident in 2028 (the setting of Paradox) causes the monster-rampage of Cloverfield in 2008, as well as the unfolding attack from a bigger creature.
Whether it’s across alternate dimensions or a proper grandfather paradox isn’t made clear, but we can infer that The Cloverfield Paradox created an possibly infinite set of possible new Cloverfield stories to be told. And that’s where Overlord comes in.
Is Cloverfield 4’s Nazi Science One Of The Rifts?
According to the official synopsis of Overlord (which admittedly may a red herring to keep inevitable surprises secret), the otherworldly dangers encountered by the heroes are a result of Nazi experiments. However, in light of Paradox, it’s highly likely that the sci-fi influence is a result of the dimensional meddling in 2028, showing a greater impact on the world than the contemporary cases in previous films. This does create a more confusing form of time travel (we have the future affecting the past without it then having a knock-on effect), although nothing beyond what Paradox already suggested.
One less contradictory way to address this, however, would be to go bigger. As we’re already dealing with alternate dimensions and Overlord’s bringing in experimentation, The Cloverfield Paradox could be setting up something the other way round; we may be getting an origin story for some of the creatures that come through to our world. That’s obviously purely theory, although evidently nothing is out of the question for this franchise.

But even if The Cloverfield Paradox has provided the sci-fi key to Overlord, there’s still a lot of mystery around the project. What will it be called? And when will audiences get to see it? A late-2018 date is set, but will that move or could it drop shockingly on Netflix? Anything’s possible with J.J. Abrams.
