How The DC Multiverse Impacts Batgirl Movie According to JK Simmons

Batgirl star J.K. Simmons explains what his return means for the film’s place in the DC Extended Universe. Batgirl, which is currently filming in Scotland, is being helmed by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah from a script by Christina Hodson, who previously wrote Birds of Prey and 2022’s The Flash for DC. The new Batgirl film has an eye on an exclusive HBO Max release, likely sometime in 2023. In addition to Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Batgirl stars Leslie Grace as his daughter Barbara Gordon, who becomes Batgirl, as well as Brendan Fraser as the pyromaniac villain Firefly.

Simmons first appeared as Commissioner Gordon, the iconic Batman character (who was most recently played by Ben McKenzie in Gotham and Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy) in 2017’s Justice League. Despite getting incredibly fit for the role, the actor didn’t play much of a part in the events of the film. He did also appear in this year’s new recut version Zack Snyder’s Justice League, but suffered a similar lack of screentime. Seemingly, Simmons was being set up to appear in further DC universe films that didn’t pan out after Justice League failed to set the box office on fire, so it was a surprise for many to hear he would be returning in Batgirl.

Recently, Simmons spoke with Looper (via Den of Geek) about his own surprise that he would be returning to the iconic role. However, he let slip that this film will be taking place in a “new version of the universe,” so the character will be in a slightly different continuity than that of Justice League. He learned that “superhero multiverses” will sometimes “go in different directions,” but he is gratified Commissioner Gordon is “a more significant character in the story this time around.” Read his full quote below:

“I was as surprised as I was when [Marvel] came back to ask me to do [J. Jonah Jameson] that they were coming to me to play Batgirl’s father, Commissioner Gordon, again, in this new version of the universe … We’ve already had lots of discussions about the script and how to play everything. It’s a more significant character in the story this time around, which is great … When we were doing Zack Snyder’s Justice League, that was with the intent that we were laying groundwork for these characters to be expanded on. And with these superhero multiverses, I guess now they go in different directions.”

As he mentioned in his quote, this isn’t the first time Simmons has resurrected an old comic book character in the recent past. Even more confusingly for a man who is still just grasping the idea of multiverses, he appeared in Spider-Man: Far from Home as gruff newspaperman J. Jonah Jameson, the character he first played in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy, which began in 2002. The MCU’s Jameson is quite different from the original role, portrayed as more of a conspiracy-obsessed fear mongerer, even though the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to have many other previous characters return in more or less their original forms.

Justice League’s failure to create a coherent DC universe is confusing for many fans, considering the fact that characters from the film including Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash are still going to appear in follow-up films. However, Batgirl being officially set in a different part of the multiverse will allow it to mark its own path away from the cumbersome Batman lore of the current franchise. Rather than being beholden to the Ben Affleck branch of the universe or that of Robert Pattinson’s upcoming The Batman, Barbara Gordon has room to grow on her own.
