How The Expanse Changes [SPOILER]s Death

Caution: spoilers ahead for The Expanse season 5

Amazon’s The Expanse switches up a landmark character death compared to the books. Ever since The Expanse season 5 began, James Holden and Fred Johnson have been dealing with a major headache. Somewhat sneakily, Fred chose not to dispose of the Belt’s Protomolecule sample, and has continued to experiment on the lethal extra-terrestrial substance. This information fell into the wrong hands, and a shady unknown agent has been working to steal Fred’s secret stash ever since, while the Tycho boss and James Holden unsuccessfully attempt to catch the villain before things escalate.

Then things escalated. The Expanse season 5’s “Gaugamela” finds Holden and Fred waiting to spring an ambush, blissfully unaware that one of their inner circle is a mole for the enemy. Taking her boss by surprise, Sakai shoots Fred Johnson in the back and ensures a salvage droid escapes with his Protomolecule sample. Holden is left despondent, and Fred is left dead. Viewers familiar with James S.A. Corey’s The Expanse books might’ve anticipated Sakai’s betrayal and the seizing of the Protomolecule, but Fred Johnson’s death comes as a surprise to fans of all persuasions.

In Corey’s Nemesis Games, Fred Johnson’s office is attacked by an incoming ship, and the Protomolecule is lost. The Expanse season 5 adapts this sequence quite faithfully. However, Sakai is apprehended some time before the attack, and the dynamic duo of Fred and Holden successfully fend off the attacking Belters. The coup of Tycho is devastating to the fragile peace of the Sol system but, crucially, Fred Johnson does survive the incident. Instead of breathing his last on Tycho, Fred Johnson leaves the station to his security chief (Bull on TV, Camina Drummer in the books) and joins James Holden aboard the Rocinante.

How The Expanse Changes [SPOILER]s Death

Still without his regular crew mates, Holden charts a course for Luna, where Fred Johnson meets with Chrisjen Avasarala and an alliance is formed against the emerging threat of Marco Inaros, after Earth and Tycho both fell foul of the villain in rapid succession. After helping to organize a coordinated response to the Free Navy, Fred tries to rally his OPA allies against Marco and heads back to Tycho with the Roci, but the ship is ambushed by Inaros before arriving, and an intense battle begins between ships. Fred Johnson is killed in the hostilities, unable to handle the high-G combat. These events occur in Babylon’s Ashes, the sequel to Nemesis Games.

Although The Expanse season 5 changes Fred Johnson’s death quite heavily, the shift is arguably better for live-action. Sakai’s assassination adds a hefty punctuation mark to the Tycho coup, putting a tragic spin on an already dire situation. The character’s role might’ve been extended in the books, but dying on his own station at the hands of a supposed ally is far more dramatic than having a stroke during a space dogfight. An early death for Fred Johnson also serves to accelerate the Nemesis Games narrative, and since his part can be picked up by other characters, nothing is lost by having Fred exit early.

The Expanse season 5 will deviate even further from Nemesis Games following Fred Johnson’s death. The Belt’s interests must now be represented by another character (likely Camina Drummer) and Holden could meet Avasarala on Luna alone. But the battle between the Rocinante and Marco Inaros’ Pella will almost certainly go ahead as planned. Space battles are a highlight of The Expanse, and obviously come to life far better on TV than in the novels. With a fight between Holden and Inaros inevitable, the Roci might engage Inaros in an effort to reclaim the Protomolecule or help Naomi rescue Filip, rather than in the process of transporting Fred Johnson.
