How The Flash Armageddon Sets Up Batwoman Season 3s Perfect Ending

CAUTION: Spoilers for The Flash season 8 and Batwoman season 3.

Batwoman’s Ryan Wylder made a cameo in The Flash season 8 episode “Armageddon, Part 4” that may hint at the ending of Batwoman season 3, particularly in regards to Ryan and Sophie’s relationship. In the alternative timeline created by Reverse Flash, Ryan (Javicia Leslie) was spotted at the engagement party for Eobard Thawne (Tom Cavanagh) and Iris West (Candice Patton), showing support for the latter. The two were depicted as being very close, reminiscing about their shared past and mutual support in their own personal relationships.

The alternative timeline was destroyed at the end of the episode thanks to Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) cooperating. Nevertheless, some interesting questions could arise from the episode, especially regarding the pairings it suggested. Thawne and Iris were romantically involved because he was trying to steal Barry’s life, in an attempt to become the fastest Flash and the perceived hero. But Ryan and Sophie were also considered a couple, and they have some shared history, even in the real timeline.

Iris and Ryan’s talks in between their fights against Barry—who was himself the Reverse Flash in the alternative timeline—revealed that Ryan and Sophie were married, and were actually considering having children back in Gotham. This different timeline not only created a close relationship between Iris and Ryan that is nonexistent in the real timeline, but it also shone a light on an alternate future where Ryan and Sophie have been together for quite some time. The Flash: Armageddon could have foreshadowed how Sophie and Ryan’s relationship will be at the end of Batwoman season 3.

At the start of Batwoman season 3, Ryan and Sophie’s relationship changed. When they first met, Ryan did not trust her because of her job with the Crows. However, throughout season 2 the two became friends who could consistently count on one another. With Kate (Wallis Day) being discovered alive and subsequently leaving Gotham, Sophie was freed from the burden of the love of her life being dead, and after a while, she and Ryan started flirting with each other. The two even went on a date together during Batwoman season 3, episode 5, although it turned out to be a play to investigate Ryan’s birth mother, Jada Jet (Robin Givens).

Ryan’s relationship with Jada, whose illicit dealings unwittingly risked Sophie’s sister’s life, put her in an ambiguous situation with Sophie. Their relationship only worsened when Sophie came clean with her about sleeping with officer Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) in episode 7. All these clues, the fact that both women do not have a romantic interest at the moment, and how central their conflict has been both for the plot and the characters themselves, suggest their pairing will be the main one of Batwoman season 3. With Ryan longing for someone to be with after Angelique’s sacrifice and Ryan finally over Kate, this would be the perfect moment for the two to find some well-deserved happiness.
