In the fallout of King in Black, the Reckoning War has been announced as one of the next major Marvel Comics crossover events, and it has been building for a while. Many comics have been teasing the oncoming galactic battle from issues featuring the Watcher to She-Hulk. While it’s been a threat looming in the cosmos for some time, it has been kept at bay for one reason or another, but now may be the perfect time to strike thanks to an attack by another universe-altering threat that has since weakened the Earth’s defenses, the King in Black. As Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are recovering, they’ll be faced with perhaps an even greater threat, one they may be in no position to win.
Fantastic Four: Reckoning War by Dan Slott, Carlos Pacheco, and Rachael Stott will be an all-new adventure taken on by Marvel’s First Family as well as the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While this comic will be brand new, the idea for Reckoning War has been brewing in the background of Marvel Comics for nearly two decades. The first mention of the cosmic battle was written by Slott in 2005’s She-Hulk #3 by a member of the Time Variance Authority. Since then, the comic writer has been sprinkling the idea of a looming threat, and now that the world has been weakened by the King in Black, the day of reckoning has finally come.
The King In Black was the last major Marvel crossover event, one which brought the whole world to its knees. Knull, the King in Black and Lord of the Abyss, was trapped inside a prison of his own making in the form of the Klyntar race. When he broke free, Knull traveled to Earth where he wrapped the planet in a giant symbiote, engulfing it in darkness, and then using his symbiotes to infect and possess countless heroes and villains alike. The King in Black was eventually defeated by Venom, but not before nearly irreparably damaging the Earth, leaving it especially vulnerable.
Little is known right now as to what to expect with the upcoming Reckoning War event other than what was released by Marvel Comics on Marvel’s birthday and the clues that have been strung together from Dan Slott’s previous books. The latest easter egg came from 2020’s Empyre: Fantastic Four’s Fallout one-shot which showed a revived Uatu muttering to himself, “There shall be… a reckoning.” The official release from Marvel Comics states that the event will reignite the original secret war of the Marvel Universe leaving every living being across the cosmos in danger.
Dan Slott took to Twitter after the new saga was announced, saying that while the easter eggs run deep throughout the last fifteen years of Marvel Comics, the series will still be a perfect jump-on point for new readers. However, to understand what Marvel’s heroes just went through before undertaking this new challenge, including in a great deal the Fantastic Four, the King In Black event is a must-read! After battling such a ferocious villain, arguably one of the greatest threats in Marvel’s history, how will Earth’s Mightiest Heroes be ready to face this mysterious new threat? Fantastic Four: Reckoning War begins January 2022!
