How to beat the Hole Punch in Paper Mario

As Mario ventures forth in the new JRPG Paper Mario: The Origami King, he will be confronted by turn-based battles against various foes. Typically, the enemies he will face are simple Goombas or Ninji. However, every once in a while, he will come across a more difficult boss battle to overcome. A series of bosses known as the Legion of Stationery are scattered throughout the game. These boss battles take place against various office supplies that would be horrifying from the perspective of a piece of paper: Colored Pencils, a Stapler, and, at the disco in the Scorching Sandpaper Desert, a Hole Punch.

In the Scorching Sandpaper Desert, Mario will need to find Faceless Toads. Unlike the Hidden Toads, these are Toads whose faces have been punched out, presumably by the Hole Punch. When Mario finds 40 of them, he will get the chance to dance with them at the disco, which attracts the Hole Punch. During the fight, Mario will need to manage the board carefully and win the fight to get the Toads their faces back. Here’s how to defeat the Hole Punch in Paper Mario: The Origami King.

Prepare for the Battle with the Hole Punch in Paper Mario: The Origami King

How to beat the Hole Punch in Paper Mario

Players will want to be prepared for this boss battle. The Hole Punch’s main move is to punch holes in the board, creating obstacles for Mario to overcome.

Like the Colored Pencils, Hole Punch is only vulnerable to attacks from behind. Boots and other items will not work, and the only weapon that can deal damage to the Hole Punch is a Hammer.

When it is Mario’s turn to arrange the board, the player will want to make sure his attack will land on the Hole Punch’s flank rather than from the front. They should try to close the gap between Mario and the Hole Punch as much as possible using the arrows so they can land a good first hit.

The fight pattern is different every time, so the player should always prepare beforehand and think carefully about their next moves.

After Mario lands his first hit, the Hole Punch will strike back and take his face, cutting his starting health in half. He can later reclaim the pieces scattered on the board, reclaiming his lost health also. This should be prioritized during the fight to avoid HP dipping too low and facing defeat.

Mario will want to keep hitting the Hole Punch with a hammer to wear it down. It will help to use the Shiny and Flashy variations to land harder hits and do more damage more quickly.

When Mario deals enough damage, the Hole Punch will power up a glowing yellow ring around itself, indicating it will use its special move. To combat this, Mario should use an ON switch and step onto the Earth Vellumental circle on the board to defend against the incoming attack. He will be lifted off the ground on a platform, and the Hole Punch will hit the side of the platform instead, falling onto its back.

At this point, Mario should line up the ring to use the 1000-Fold Arm attack to deal an impressive amount of damage. If this does not immediately end the fight, the player will want to repeat the process until the boss has been defeated.
