How To Change Outfits in Mafia Definitive Edition

A remake of the classic 2002 game series, Mafia: Definitive Edition places players back in the role of Tommy Angelo as he navigates the criminal underbelly of Lost Heaven in the 1930s and works with and sometimes against the Salieri crime family. The remake includes a complete graphics overhaul, new assets and campaigns, and almost creates an entirely new experience while still remaining true to what endeared players to the original. While the game adheres to a single-player, mission-based story structure, Mafia: Definitive Edition comes with another unlockable mode, Free Ride, as a nod to the original. In this mode, players can explore Lost Heaven at their leisure and unlock secret side missions.

Unlike in the typical game mode, Free Ride mode allows the player to engage in some character customization, making it possible for them to change their clothing. Mob bosses and other members of organized crime were often known for their snappy style of dress and relatively expensive taste that allowed them to appear as respectable citizens while committing nefarious deeds. Tommy is no different. However, players cannot select his costume in the typical story mode and must instead wait for Free Ride mode to do so. Here’s how to change Tommy’s outfit in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

To change costumes in the game, players must first unlock Free Ride mode. This process is not difficult and should happen as the player progresses through the main story. All the player needs to do is complete Chapter 1 and the opening mission of the story, which takes around 20 minutes. With that finished, the player can return to the main menu and choose to start the game in Free Ride Mode.

The player will need to enter Free Ride mode, which always spawns Tommy in Salieri’s Bar in Little Italy first. This serves as the hub where players can accept new missions and, in the case of customization, allow Tommy to change clothes before working on missions.

Players will need to navigate to the back of the bar by the pool table and enter the next room. There, the player will find some stairs. Travel up the stairs and open the door to the left.

In this room, players can find a wardrobe. They’ll need to interact with it to open up a new menu containing all the costumes the player has unlocked. Players will need to click on the outfit they want to apply it to Tommy. At first, there won’t be very many available. Players unlock more outfits by completing missions and exploring Lost Heaven. They can also unlock an outfit by linking their 2K account to the game and completing challenges. There are a variety of looks inspired by 1930s America, from a more traditional mobster Fedora-and-trenchcoat combo to a cowboy costume.

Players can return to this room in Free Ride to change Tommy’s costume whenever they want.
