How to Find (& Catch) Electivire in Pokémon Crown Tundra

Electivire is one of many creatures returning in Pokémon Sword & Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion. This Electric-type first appeared in Diamond and Pearl as a new evolution for the Electabuzz line. They use their tail to pin down opponents and jolt them with their impressive energy reserves.

Their Attack stat is tremendous, allowing them to dish out a lot of damage with every hit. Though their base speed is respectable, it can be boosted by one stage every time it’s hit by an Electric move, thanks to it’s Motor Drive ability. This can allow it to outpace and sweep opponents online using strong moves like Wild Charge, Earthquake, and many more. For those looking to add this wrecking ball of a Pokémon, here’s where to find it in the Crown Tundra.

Catching Electivire in the Crown Tundra

Owners of both Sword and Shield can both encounter this Electric ape wandering about the Crown Tundra’s wild area in 4 specific regions: The Giant’s Bed, Ballimere lake, Three-Point Pass, and Frigid Sea. Though they can be found in these places, there are some areas where they’re easier to find. When searching the Ballimere lake, they can be found all along the outskirts surrounding the Dyna Hill Tree. At the Three-Point Pass, they’re in between the stone pillars adjacent to the Split-Decision Ruins. Only one spawns per day in each area, so be sure not to save before trying to catch them. However, they will only appear when it’s thunder storming, so players will need to either wait for such a day to come or change their Switch’s in-game clock to manually find such a day. They can also be caught in Dynamax dens in each of these respective areas, but that’s only if they appear as that day’s battle.

Though this beast can dish out a lot of damage, there are several Pokémon that resist its attacks entirely. Electivires will have Electric, Normal, and Fighting-type moves when fought in the wild, though it’s actual move coverage is much greater once caught. Players can use these limitations to their advantage by bringing types that are immune to everything they have. Ground types, the classic counter to Electric types, and Ghost types, which are immune to the others, will easily wall Electivires not owned by trainers. There are 3 different species that have both of these types: Golurk, Pallosand, and Runerigus. Bringing any of them will eliminate any threat Electivire poses, but they have a few tricks up their sleeve that will make catching them tricky. Paralysis and Sleep, 2 common status conditions used to increase the odds of catch rates, will not work on them, as Electric types are immune to the former and the Electric Terrain caused by the thunderstorm prevents the latter. Don’t waste time using these moves and instead whittle down its HP bit by bit. Try using Night Shade, a move learned by Golurk and Runerigus, as it deals damage equal to the user’s level. This fixed damage makes it a more predictable way to lower an enemy’s health for capture, as players will know how much damage it will deal every single time.
