How To Fix Apple Watch Update Stuck On Verifying

Apple regularly releases software updates for the Apple Watch, but unfortunately, they don’t always work as intended. Over the years, many Apple Watch owners have complained that it gets stuck on a ‘Veryifying’ screen — thus making it impossible for the update to complete. As annoying as this can be in the moment, the good news is that there are a few tips to get past this screen and finish an update.

Whenever Apple releases a new version of watchOS, users get a notification from the Watch app on their iPhone alerting them to it. Apple then directs users to open the app, go to its settings, and install the software update there. After checking for the update and finding it, the Watch app shows the update version, a changelog of its new features/bug fixes, and then says it’s ‘Verifying’ the update to make sure it’s safe to download. It’s a fine security protocol to have, but as many Apple Watch owners have pointed out, this ‘Verifying’ message tends to get stuck and not go away. It may initially seem like there’s nothing someone can do to get past it, but that’s not exactly true.

First thing’s first, check all the prerequisites outlined by Apple. This includes updating the paired iPhone to the most recent version of iOS, ensuring the Apple Watch is on the charger with at least 50 percent battery, enabling Wi-Fi on the iPhone, and ensuring the iPhone and Apple Watch are next to each other. If all of these things have been done but the Verifying message is still there, one Apple expert recommends closing the Watch app, opening it back up, and trying the update again. On an iPhone X or newer, the app can be closed by swiping up from the bottom of the screen, holding there for a second to access the multitasking page, and then swiping up on the Watch app to dismiss it.

Other Apple Watch Tips To Get Past The Verifying Screen

Another option is to access the update directly from the Apple Watch and not through the iPhone app. Open the app page on the Apple Watch, tap the Settings app, tap ‘General,’ and then tap ‘Software Update.’ This will show the same ‘Verifying’ message at first, but after placing the Watch on the charger, it should begin downloading all the necessary files and complete the update within a few minutes.

Last but certainly not least, the iPhone and Apple Watch may need a good-old restart. Turning a device off and back on again is often the easiest way to fix a gadget when it’s acting up, and in the case of Apple Watch updates being stuck on the Verifying screen, this rule does apply. For the Apple Watch, hold down the side button, wait for the power menu to appear, and then drag the ‘Power Off’ toggle all the way to the right. For the iPhone, hold down the Siri button + volume down buttons simultaneously, wait for the power menu, and then drag the ‘Slide to Power Off’ toggle to the right. Let both devices stay turned off for about 30 seconds, power them back on, and try the update again.

Apple Watch updates have always been a chore, but with these tips in mind, they should be a bit easier to deal with. Follow all of these steps, have some patience, and that pesky update will be finished in no time at all.
