Their most important scenes were linked to the grief of the child Annalise lost, a tragedy made even more gut-wrenching with the revelation of Frank’s unintentional role in the situation. It was even more devastating to learn that Sam knew the truth about Frank’s role, kept it a secret, and used it to essentially blackmail Frank into killing Lila.

The show found a way to connect so many essential threads together, answering crucial questions while also forever transforming the key relationship between Frank and Annalise.

8 “Lahey v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania” – 9.1

Shondaland fans had their dreams come true when the worlds of Annalise Keating and Olivia Pope clashed for episodes of How To Get Away With Murder and Scandal. The How To Get Away With Murder episode formed the second hour of the crossover event and saw Olivia helping Annalise to bring her class action lawsuit before the Supreme Court.

It became one of the show’s most emotional and morally complicated of all the murder nights as it was fueled by the rage surrounding the murder of Nate Lahey Sr., with the characters and the audience still reeling from the injustice. The murder was committed by a longtime character the audience rooted for and liked, and yet it was clear that the murder victim might not be guilty after all.

How To Get Away With Murder hooked many fans with its structure of flash-forwards where each week they revealed another piece of the puzzle. This episode saw the flash-forwards catch up to the present, with all the pieces falling into place as fans finally saw how Sam Keating died, who killed him, and why it was being covered up.

It’s the show at its best, delivering long-anticipated payoff while also raising fascinating questions that leaves fans wanting more. The payoff came in the events surrounding Sam’s murder while fans were left grappling with questions following the moment Wes apologizes to Sam’s corpse and Annalise is there and says, “Don’t be.”

Anyone who stuck with How To Get Away With Murder through its first season wanted to get to the truth of who killed Lila Stangard. It seemed unlikely that the show could answer the longtime mystery in a way that was shocking, satisfying, and made sense with all the other twists and turns.

This episode overcame the odds, answering the Lila mystery in a way that was unexpected, rewarding, and logical, all while making fans reconsider what they knew as the show concluded its first season and headed into its second season. As if that wasn’t enough, the mysterious identity of who Rebecca contacted for help and her fate at the end of the episode left audiences even more eager for the second season.

The show had the guts to kill off Wes, despite the fact that up to that point, the show had truly belonged to him and Annalise. Fans believed Wes was safe by manipulating the timeline of information shown in the flash-forwards and were hit even harder with the confirmation that Wes was already dead before Annalise’s house burnt down. The episode was the perfect blend of suspense, unexpected payoff, and many lingering questions as it forever changed the landscape of the series.

2 “Live. Live. Live.” – 9.6

Season 4 delivered the most convoluted and unsatisfying murder night yet, a series of events that revolved around the poorly developed character Simon and the perils of him tripping over a rolling office chair. That said, it’s still one of the highest-rated episodes because of the elevator sequence.

The way Laurel’s son Christopher came into the world was unnerving, terrifying, and electrifying all at once to watch. Divided opinions on Laurel’s character momentarily ceased to matter as everyone felt deeply for her in this scene. Annalise reaching throughout the elevator grate and delivering CPR to the newborn Christopher was emotional enough and made more so given the traumatic memory of her own stillborn child, and the lengths she’ll go to for Laurel and all her young proteges.

1 “What Did We Do?” – 9.6

The murder night in season 2 somehow outdid the first season’s murder night. With the Hapstall case imploding and Asher breaking bad and killing prosecutor Emily Sinclair, this season’s murder night became an elaborate cover-up concocted by Annalise. Fans also found out that it was Wes who shot Annalise, and that she convinced him to shoot her as an insane, yet brilliant part of the cover-up.

After convincing Wes to shoot her by admitting the truth about Rebecca, the show experienced a truly game-changing moment as the wounded Annalise muttered the name “Christophe.” The flashback to Wes as a young child with Annalise and Eve watching him would forever change the trajectory of the show.
