After six seasons and 90 episodes, ABC legal thriller How To Get Away With Murder came to an end on May 14th, 2020. The Shondaland series which was set in the same universe as Scandal had plenty of fascinating characters led by the main protagonist Annalise Keating (Viola Davis).
For her performance as Annalise, Viola became the first African American woman to win the Emmy for “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.” Several other cast members were also nominated for multiple awards during the series run. But which characters did fans warm up to the most?
10 Asher
At first, Asher gave the appearance of an entitled, know-it-all man. He had come from a wealthy background after all. However, he managed to improve as the show progressed. His ego subsided and he became a gentle soul.
Despite the messy relationships, the heartbreaking death of Sam, and his father’s suicide, he managed to keep it all together. Sadly, he was murdered by a corrupt FBI agent so as to initiate the events that would lead to Annalise’s murder trial.
9 Can’t Stand: Jorge Castillo
Esai Morales has done a great job of portraying villains on TV. He was magnificent as the Navarro Cartel lieutenant Del in Ozark and in How To Get Away With Murder, he was great too as the crime boss Jorge Castillo. However, he did too many bad things that made it difficult for any viewer to like him.
Nearly all of Annalise’s woes led back to him. Jorge was also estranged to his more likable daughter Laurel. He did everything to ensure he stayed at the top, including his son to do his dirty deeds. After getting tired of his betrayals, Laurel eventually organized for him to be killed in prison.
8 Likable: Laurel Castillo
Laurel’s appeal came from her unpredictability. Despite being a bit reserved, she always managed to pull a surprising move. Initially, she seemed like a good person. Her decision to enroll in law school was influenced by her desire to learn how to defend the poor. Soon, her dark side began emerging.
Due to her intelligence, she managed to do plenty of bad things without exactly giving the appearance of a villain. And she was well aware of her dark side. One of her best quotes in the series is: “I’m a cheater, yes. And a slut and a bad person and now a murderer. Judge me if you want. Just do it while we’re carrying the damn body!”
7 Can’t Stand: Governor Lynne Birkhead
Pennsylvania Governor Lynne Birkhead had the words “evil politician” written all over her. Anyone who got in the way of her dirty schemes ended up dead. She ordered Xavier Castillo to kill Nathaniel Lahey, Sr., and she was also linked to the murders of Emmett Crawford and Asher Millstone.
What made her a hated character was the fact that she was out to get Annalise. When Annalise wanted to get a job to pay for the cases of her plaintiffs the governor called all the firms that had given her an offer and warned them. She also set up Annalise and tried to use her influence to make sure the protagonist lost in court.
6 LIkable: Connor Walsh
Connor Walsh openly embraced his sexuality, thus making himself one of the most intriguing LGBTQ characters on TV. He was also extremely intelligent and he knew it. Connor always spoke his mind too. He never hesitated to call anyone out whenever he thought that whatever they were doing was silly.
Connor was also aware of his good looks and while he initially came off as a bit promiscuous, he matured up and settled down with Oliver Hampton. And like any intelligent person, Connor kept changing his mind to ensure he made the best decision. He quit Law School then came back after realizing he’d made a mistake.
5 Solomon Vick
Solomon Vick was portrayed as a playboy but he never really looked like one. He was more suited to a role as a loving dad who enjoyed staying at home. But a loving dad was something he was not. Later on in the series, it was discovered that the wealthy attorney was Michaela’s biological father.
He radiated all the stereotypes of mean, wealthy businessmen. He enjoyed living lavishly, dating different women, smiling when he didn’t mean it, and giving false promises. And no viewer could possibly forgive him for abandoning Michaela when she was young. What’s worse is that he tried to buy back her love and forgiveness.
4 Michaela Pratt
From the very first season, Michaela’s ambition was clear. She was more than eager to impress Professor Annalise Keating in class. She looked up to her and did everything to be like her. Her ambition eventually turned her inro an overachiever, something she didn’t mind.
Her ambition is mostly fuelled by the fact that her childhood was terrible. Her mother was shot by her dad. She was thus taken by social services and raised by an adoptive mother. The poor household she grew up in made her vow to get the best out of life. And she did her best to make that happen.
3 Can’t Stand: Bonnie
Bonnie Winterbottom was good at her job. She always appeared nice but she had the ability to let her fangs out when no one expected it. Most of the time, she wasn’t exactly instrumental to the plot and her actions made her an easy person to hate.
She slept with Asher, murdered Rebecca, went after Annalise’s husband, and spent most of the time frowning. Sadly, she passed away during the court shootout scene when Frank was trying to kill Governor Lynn Birkhead. She didn’t deserve to die like that but the show as full of unexpected things.
2 Annalise Keating
Annalise was not perfect by any means but she tried her best. As the main protagonist, almost every major event was linked to her. She’s been through plenty of tough times bit she always rose and kept moving.
Cops and corrupt politicians tried to take her down a number of times while her Keating team continued to give her headaches, thanks to their major scandals that mostly revolve around murder. Despite the challenges, Annalise remained self-dependent, confident, and resilient. She kept the appearance of a strong woman no matter what happened.
1 Can’t Stand: Wes Gibbins
Wes was often whiny, nagging, and annoying. He shot Annalise (totally unforgivable), he kept playing the victim in every scenario and he had the habit of asking too many questions even when it wasn’t necessary. Wes couldn’t even sense danger when it was right in front of him.
It was his intention to come forward about the killing of Sam that eventually got him murdered by Dominic Flores and Jorge Castillo. His revelations could have had a negative effect on the stock value of Antares. It was sad to see him go like that but plenty of viewers saw it coming. He just never got the hint that he was on a downward spiral.
