How To Get Away With Murder 5 Things We Loved About The Finale (& 5 That We Didnt)

After 6 seasons, the incredible Shondaland show How to Get Away with Murder has finally come to an end. The show was well-received with a dedicated and loyal fan base, though some plotlines and twists were more favored than others. Showrunner Pete Nowalk regularly talked about the final season in interviews, boasting about the way the show ended. He promised that the final season would bring new crazy twists and that all of the fans’ questions would be answered.

Fans were skeptical heading into the finale. How could 43 minutes possibly answer all of the lingering questions? Would the show really be able to provide an ending that paid homage to the beloved characters while staying true to the show’s format? While the finale certainly had some satisfying moments, we are sad to report there were also moments that left us feeling disappointed. Check out these 5 things we loved about the finale and 5 things we didn’t.

10 Didn’t Love: No Dominating Cross

So many fans love Annalise because she is fierce. In the early seasons, courtroom scenes were common. Fans loved watching Annalise dominate during these scenes, hurtling questions with lightning speed.

As the series progressed, these scenes became less common. With the finale giving fans a chance to see Annalise in the courtroom again, many were delighted to have another chance to watch Annalise shine. Unfortunately, very little cross-examination was shown and fans didn’t get the chance to see Annalise command one last time.

9 Loved: Signature Format

HTGAWM has become known for its signature format. The show would portray flashforwards throughout the season. Many midseason finales began with the famed clock countdown popping up on the screen and rolling backward. This is a signal to fans that something exciting is about to begin as the events leading up to the mystery of the season begin.

As this was a finale and not a midseason finale, it wasn’t clear whether or not this clock would be shown. Luckily, it popped up on the screen and rolled backward, giving longstanding fans of the show an adrenaline rush.

8 Didn’t Love: Oliver And Connor Drama

How To Get Away With Murder 5 Things We Loved About The Finale (& 5 That We Didnt)

Oliver and Connor have had their ups and downs, but despite their problems, they are the best relationship to come out of the show. Connor and Oliver have both made tremendous growth since the beginning of the show. In some ways, they have switched beliefs and morals. Oliver has been begging Connor to make deals all season but Connor has felt that he needed to take responsibility for his actions.

In the finale, Oliver threatens to divorce Connor if he doesn’t agree to make a deal to keep himself from going to prison. This leads to a fight and a scene in which Connor tells Oliver he doesn’t love him. The two have a teary goodbye as Connor is taken away in handcuffs and it seems like there may be a chance for this couple. It is later revealed that these two did, in fact, live a happy life together, so why throw in this unnecessary drama?

7 Loved: Michaela’s Monologue

Michaela is a fighter. She has always owned who she is, the good and the bad. Many forget the struggle that Michaela has gone through to get where she is. Her ambition and drive come from a life of struggle and pain.

Some perceive Michaela as venomous and foul. Having seen very little of her past, it is easy to believe that Michaela is spoiled. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Michaela deserves the success she gets because she earned it, and her powerful monologue in the finale reiterated that.

6 Didn’t Love: Laurel’s Mother’s Death Reveal

Laurel’s mom was never fully developed. She seemed to appear out of nowhere and disappears just as quickly as she appeared. When Sandrine went missing, finding her turned into a big mystery. Laurel was even mailed a piece of her mother’s scalp in the mail.

While it was implied the Castillo family had something to do with her disappearance, nothing was ever confirmed. Fans expected to get more information about the events surrounding her disappearance. Instead, they were given a throwaway line in the finale, in which Laurel accuses her father of murdering her mother, giving this mystery a very unsatisfying ending.

5 Loved: Nate Acknowledges His Errors

Nate suffered a lot of hardship during the series. Though he was a victim in some situations, he also brought many of these situations upon himself. Yet Nate constantly asserted that everyone else was in the wrong and he was in the right. His refusal to take responsibility for his own actions caused him to seem arrogant and ignorant.

In the finale, Nate finally gets the redemption arc he deserves. He accepts his role in the past events and apologizes to Annalise for constantly blaming her for everything. He also encourages her to look inward and acknowledge her own mistakes. Nate even risks a 20 million dollar settlement by testifying in favor of Annalise on the stand.

4 Didn’t Love: Annalise’s Funeral

How To Get Away With Murder 5 Things We Loved About The Finale (& 5 That We Didnt)

The show made a big deal about Annalise’s funeral. The phrase “Who killed Annalise?” was sprawled over marketing messages and in every commercial. The show aired clips of what seemed to be Wes Gibbons appearing at her funeral. Though many fans speculated that this may be a flash-forward and that Alfred Enoch was portraying his son, Christopher, this is a reveal we did not want.

While there were beautiful aspects of the funeral, such as Eve’s speech and the flashes of Annalise’s life, there are also dreadful aspects. The old-age makeup was terrible and the ages seemed inconsistent. More importantly, it seemed to cheapen the otherwise emotional scene as Annalise’s “murder” had been so heavily teased.

3 Loved: Mama’s Speech

Cicely Tyson is the best guest actress to appear on HTGAWM. Her scenes as Annalise’s mom are always delightful to watch. Luckily, fans were given the chance to get one more life lesson from Mama. She gave a beautiful speech encouraging Annalise to push forward and “show up.” This moment between Annalise and her mom definitely brought tears to the eyes of fans.

2 Didn’t Love: Bonnie Died For Frank

Bonnie’s assault is an aspect of her past that she never seemed to move beyond. While it’s true that survivors are heavily impacted by their past, fans had hoped that Bonnie had grown enough as a character to not be reduced to her relationship with a man.

Instead of the finale showing Bonnie’s ferocity and strength, it mostly focused on her toxic relationship with Frank. In the end, Bonnie died for a man who didn’t give her the love and respect she deserved.

1 Loved: Annalise’s Monologue

While the finale didn’t give us a powerful cross, it did give us one last beautifully moving Annalise monologue. In the monologue, Annalise took responsibility for some of the mistakes she has made in the past. But she didn’t dwell on the error of her ways.

Instead, Annalise delivered a powerful speech about all the ways she has overcome the odds and expectations set for her. The finale gave Viola Davis one more chance to shine as this forceful woman was vulnerable and strong at the same time.
