How to Get the Phantom Cloak without the Spider Magnet in Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread features a number of upgrades and abilities, including the phantom cloak which players can obtain early without having the spider magnet. There are multiple opportunities for players to shorten their runs and skip ahead in Metroid Dread. Getting the phantom cloak early will help players conceal Samus from her enemies. This upgrade also allows Samus to pass through presence doors.

In order to get the phantom cloak, players will need to defeat Corpious in Metroid Dread. Usually, to reach this boss players will need to obtain the spider magnet from an E.M.M.I. The spider magnet is then used to climb the wall in Artaria that leads to the first boss fight. Instead, there is a method that will allow players to reach Corpious earlier in the game.

For those looking to avoid killing an E.M.M.I. in Metroid Dread, there is another way into the boss room in Artaria. Skipping the spider magnet involves shooting a diffusion block at a specific angle and timing moves to reach the upper area without needing to climb. To begin, head to the southeast part of Artaria and find the orange room, then go left to the underground passage with the thin ceiling. From there, players will be able to get the phantom cloak while skipping the spider magnet.

For this trick, players will first need to locate the diffusion block in the underground passage area. Although players don’t have Metroid Dread’s charge beam, or any other cannon upgrades at this point in the game, there is still a way to hit the block. Players need to line Samus up so she can slide jump and is still as close to the edge as possible. Slide, then jump straight up to line up the shot.

Samus will need to shoot the diffusion block as many times as possible while she is still partially inside the ceiling. The block will be to the top-right of the screen, so players should immediately face that direction after sliding and jumping. If timed properly, the shot will clip through the ceiling and hit the diffusion block to destroy it. Repeat this maneuver quickly until the diffusion block is destroyed, then the path to Corpious will be cleared, and Samus is free to defeat the boss.

Ths boss fight has a few different phases that players will need to survive and conquer in order to claim the phantom cloak. Once Corpious falls, Samus will collect the cloak, and it can be used to turn her invisible. This ability is especially useful for getting past the E.M.M.I. in Metroid Dread. Along with the phantom cloak, there are many upgrades available throughout the game, and some can be obtained earlier than they’re supposed to be if players follow specific paths.
