How to Remove & Change the Apple ID on an iPad

Paying attention to the Apple ID on an iPad is an important part of avoiding unwanted purchases and downloads. There are multiple reasons you’d want to know how to change or remove an Apple ID from your device.

Apple ID is the name given to the login system on iOS devices. It’s one convenient account for iTunes, the App Store, iCloud, Apple Music, and some preferences specific to that device. There are, however, times where removing or switching accounts on an iPad is necessary. These issues are most common in scenarios where multiple people share one iPad. Being in control of which one is logged in can make it easier to monitor purchases and keep track of what gets uploaded to iCloud.

To change an Apple ID on an iPad, tap the settings icon from either the app list or the home screen (or simply ask Siri to launch “Settings”) and then tap the Apple ID icon at the top of the menu. From this new Apple ID menu, select the sign-out option at the bottom. This will log that ID out of the device, replacing the ID option with the choice to sign in. The new user simply needs to tap that and log in as normal to switch to a new account.

To remove an Apple ID entirely, tap the logged-in ID from the top of the settings screen again, then tap “iTunes & App Store”. In this menu, tap the Apple ID at the top, then “Remove this Device”. This should open the Apple ID website where, after logging in, there should be a list of devices on which that ID is registered. Select the desired (or undesired, really) iPad, and choose “Remove”. This can, of course, also be done from any web browser on any device which is helpful if you ever accidentally leave yourself logged in on someone else’s iOS device.

Considerations Before Removing an Apple ID

We’ve covered a few of the reasons a person might want to remove the ID on an iPad or other Apple device – and speaking of, definitely do this before reselling or returning an iPad! However, one thing to keep in mind is you’ll lose access to almost everything on the device that was added while logged in with said ID. That includes downloads from web browsers, the App Store, and iTunes. You would be logged out of Apple Music and would have to sign in with an Apple ID to regain access. You would also lose access to most contacts and photos, even if they were added on the iPad itself rather than downloaded through iCloud. So, for most people, you’ll only want to remove an Apple ID if you’re planning for someone else to have that device.
