How To Rename Your Windows 11 PC To Reflect Your Personality

Most Windows PCs come with generic names that do not reflect the user’s personality, but they can be easily changed to something unique. Windows 11 brings a whole host of new features and functionality, including a redesigned Start Menu, an updated File Explorer, Android app support, improved widgets, advanced gesture controls, ARM emulation, and more. However, it also retains some of the existing features of Windows 10, including the ability to rename a computer from a gibberish code to something that better reflects the user’s personality.

While the renaming process is pretty straightforward, there are a few caveats that users have to keep in mind before getting started. Firstly, only users with an Administrator account can rename a Windows PC. Secondly, only standard characters can be used in the PC name, including the letters A-Z (uppercase and lowercase), the numbers 0-9, and the ‘hyphen’ (-) symbol. However, the name may not consist entirely of numbers (digits), nor can it contain spaces or special characters, such as: `~@#$%^&*, etc.

Windows 11 offers multiple ways of renaming a PC, but the easiest way is through the Settings menu. To do that, open ‘Settings’ and navigate to the ‘System’ tab on the left sidebar. Next, click on the ‘Rename’ option under the current PC name on the right pane. In the pop-up window that opens, type a new name for the PC and click on ‘Next.’ Finally, hit the ‘Restart Now’ button to apply the change. Make sure to save all unsaved work before restarting the device or opt for the ‘Restart Later’ option instead. After the restart, the name change will reflect everywhere across the PC.

Multiple Ways To Rename A Windows 11 PC

As mentioned already, there are several other ways to change the name of a Windows 11 computer, including through the ‘About’ section of the Settings menu, via System Properties (sysdm.cpl), by using the Command Prompt, and through Windows PowerShell. However, the process described above enables users to rename their computer in a few short clicks and is, by far, the easiest way to change the name of a Windows 11 computer.

Microsoft announced the release of the first preview build of Windows 11 to Windows Insiders in June 2021 before officially releasing it to all compatible devices in October. It can be installed as an in-place upgrade using either the Windows 11 Installation Assistant or via Windows Update on eligible devices. Most PC vendors have also started selling laptops and desktops with preinstalled Windows 11, which is yet another way of accessing Microsoft’s latest PC operating system.
