How To Take The Best Selfies With Galaxy Z Flip 3s Cover Screen

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a unique form foldable factor and its Cover Screen opens up new possibilities for taking the best selfies. Naturally, a person wants to look their best, capturing a particular mood or expression with a photo of themselves, and ideally in the best possible photo quality and resolution. Unfortunately, the highest resolution camera that’s included with a smartphone is usually not the one used for selfies, but that changes with the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Samsung first introduced Galaxy Z Flip in 2020 with LTE connectivity, launching a version with 5G capability and an upgraded processor six months later, which is why the 2021 model is known as the Galaxy Z Flip 3. All three versions share the vertical fold that gives the product its name. The newest version expands the size of the Cover Screen dramatically, growing from just over an inch to 1.9 inches in diagonal measurement. This led to an increase in the display area of nearly four times, making this unique secondary screen much more useful.

With Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 and earlier models, the rear cameras can be used to take a selfie, since the user can watch the display that is on the back of the device to see themselves for posing and framing the shot. To enable this feature, the Galaxy Z Flip should be in its folded position and held so the Cover Screen is visible. Then double-pressing the side button, which is also the fingerprint scanner, will cause the phone to enter Quick Shot mode. This allows photos to be taken while the Cover Screen shows a preview. Pressing either volume button will snap a picture. Quick Shot makes it possible to take photos without unfolding the phone and allows the use of the rear cameras. The only drawback is that the pictures will be cropped to be square in shape. While it isn’t clear why Samsung does this, the company might have assumed this would make sharing to social media more convenient. Thankfully, there is a way around the issue.

The Cover Screen preview can also be activated when the Galaxy Z Flip 3 is unfolded by tapping the selfie icon in the upper right corner of the main screen. This will allow taking photos with the rear cameras while watching a preview on the rear display. The advantage is that there is a choice of two cameras, wide or ultra-wide. The front-facing camera has a resolution of 10 megapixels, while the two rear cameras are each 12 megapixels. Photos can be taken using either of the volume buttons or by using the palm gesture if the feature is enabled in the phone’s camera settings.

When the rear display is showing a camera preview, swiping to the left or right on the Cover Screen will allow switching between photo and video modes. Swiping up and down changes between the wide and ultra-wide cameras, which is equivalent to zooming in and out. Tapping the screen will start a quick timer and the photo will be taken within a few seconds to allow for posing. Using Quick Shot and the other features described should lead to higher-quality selfies and the option to zoom out when more than one person is in the shot. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3’s ability to fold opens up new possibilities that make it easier to capture the best selfies.
