How Transformers Inspired Iron Mans Coolest MCU Trick

The newly released book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reveals that Iron Man’s coolest MCU trick was inspired by the Transformers films. The book, released October 19th, is a two-volume set comprised of stories from producers, writers, directors, and crew about the intricate construction of the MCU. In the book, John Favreau (Iron Man’s original director until replaced by Shane Black later on Iron Man 3) discusses his moment of inspiration for a key element of Iron Man.

An inventor and innovator, Tony Stark is one of the most beloved Marvel characters of all time. A wise-cracking, lovably self-involved arms dealer, Stark is captured while in Afghanistan for a demonstration of his latest weapon. After being imprisoned in a cave by the terrorist organization known as the Ten Rings, Tony builds his first suit of armor, escapes, and begins his life as a superhero. In 2008, Iron Man became the franchise’s first Marvel hero film with Robert Downey Jr. playing Tony Stark.

Throughout the Iron Man franchise films, Tony Stark has many iconic scenes of his transition from billionaire-inventor to armored-hero, but the book reveals that a very important element of these scenes was nearly omitted. It was a single revelatory moment for Iron Man director John Favreau that led to the inclusion of some of the most important scenes for the character. Favreau says that in seeing the advancements in CGI capabilities while watching Transformers, he knew that Iron Man’s iconic armor could finally be done in a convincing way.

Favreau claims that when watching Transformers, it was the way the film was able to make the hard surfaces, in this case, the Transformers’ metal bodies, look real when they were transforming that enabled him to envision the scenes of Tony Stark donning his armor in Iron Man. Favreau says (via The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) “I remember they initially cut out all of the stuff where Tony Stark was ‘getting dressed,’ I was like, ‘Guys, look. Transformers is making all this money and all it is is things transforming. And we’re cutting around it.”

In the interview, he likened it to Superman going into a phone booth, opening his shirt to reveal the emblem on his suit, and then the scene cutting to him already in flight. While the comparison is spot on in filming terms, Tony’s suit is far more important to his character than Superman’s. Tony Stark’s Iron Man suits are engineering wonders, with intricate mechanical workings, and they are loaded with Stark’s best weapons. The suits enable his flight, allow communication between J.A.R.V.I.S. (voiced by Paul Bettany) and the other Avengers, and they arm him to protect and defend himself and others. Superman’s suit is wardrobe; Iron Man’s suit is indispensable to his character.

After Favreau’s revelation, the scenes of Tony Stark’s armor assembling were re-filmed and added back into Iron Man. Over the next 11 years of MCU films, the scenes of Tony getting suited up became more intricate and ever more advanced as CGI capabilities continued to gain ground as seen in this clip (via YouTube). Looking back now, it is nearly impossible to imagine the Iron Man films without the legendary armor scenes.
