How Valhalla Will Be A Very Different Show To Vikings

The world of Vikings will continue to expand with the sequel series Vikings: Valhalla, but it will be a very different show from the original one – here’s why. Historical dramas have gained an audience in recent years, and one of the most popular shows is Vikings, created by Michael Hirst, the same mind behind The Tudors. Vikings premiered on History Channel in 2013 and started as a miniseries, but it was so well-received by critics and viewers that it was quickly renewed for a second season. Vikings lived on for a total of six seasons, coming to an end in December 2020, but that’s not the end for this particular world.

Vikings initially followed legendary Norse figure Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and his travels and raids alongside his Vikings brothers, from the beginning of the Viking Age, which was marked by the Lindisfarne raid (seen in season 1), onward. As the series progressed, Ragnar’s sons and their own journeys began to take over, and by the time Ragnar died in season 4, his sons were already the leads of Vikings, with Björn (Alexander Ludwig) and Ivar (Alex Høgh Andersen) being at the front and center until the show’s end. Vikings brought the arcs of its main characters to an end, but this world will continue to be explored in the spinoff series Vikings: Valhalla, which takes place many, many years after the adventures of Ragnar, Björn, and Ivar.

A sequel series to Vikings was announced in January 2019, and a couple of details have been gradually revealed since then but without giving away too much. Vikings: Valhalla is set a century after the events of the main series, and as such it will feature new characters, bringing some freshness into the mix. Viewers will get to meet some of the best-known Norsemen in history in Valhalla, as are Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett), Freydís Eiríksdóttir (Frida Gustavsson), Harald Hardrada (Leo Suter), and Norman King William the Conqueror, and while the series is still set within the Viking Age, it will be very different from Vikings.

Vikings covered the first years of the Viking Age, and Valhalla will be in charge of telling the events that led to the end of it. There are different end dates for the Viking Age, but one that fits with the plot of Valhalla is the one marked by the failed invasion by Harald Hardrada (or Harald Sigurdsson), who was defeated by Saxon King Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Stamford Bridge (an event theorized to be featured in the series) in 1066. Godwinson was defeated by William the Conqueror not long after, and it’s worth noting that William is a descendant of Rollo, Duke of Normandy, played in Vikings by Clive Standen. Vikings also covered the many raids of Ragnar and company and their quest to explore other, mythical lands far from Kattegat, which Ubbe (Jordan Patrick Smith) and Floki (Gustaf Skarsgård) eventually achieved. Valhalla, on the other hand, seems to be dealing more with the new characters carrying the legacy of all the Vikings before them and continuing with their plans of expansion, as shown in the first trailer with Leif Erikson’s arrival to North America (which in turn makes way for a plot hole thanks to Ubbe’s arrival).

The warriors in Vikings: Valhalla will surely be more ruthless than Ragnar and company as they are the descendants of many notable warriors and explorers (for example, Leif and Freydís are the children of Erik the Red, the founder of the first Norse settlement in Greenland), and they also have a lot to fight for as they defend their honor and the legacy of those who came before them. Vikings: Valhalla is on its way to being one of the most interesting historical dramas in recent years, and it will be especially interesting to see how different the story, tone, and characters will be from those in the main series.
