How Wellington Paranormal Connects To What We Do In The Shadows

The mockumentary series Wellington Paranormal is a spinoff of What We Do In The Shadows, but how are the shows connected? Wellington Paranormal season 1 debuted in the U.S. on July 11, 2021 on The CW, but the absurd, supernatural procedural has been airing in New Zealand and Australia for years. Created by Jermaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the first season aired in 2018, and it was followed by two further seasons. Although Wellington Paranormal doesn’t share a setting with Clement and Waititi’s other active TV series, WWDITS, there is a connection to the original film.

Wellington Paranormal is a supernatural procedural filmed as a documentary. Like the cult film What We Do In The Shadows, Wellington Paranormal uses an absurd, deadpan approach to comedy, contrasting the fantastic elements of its supernatural characters with the mundanity of life. Episode 1 shows Officer Minogue and Officer O’Leary stumble upon the existence of demons, and are assigned to the supernatural division of the police force. Their superior officer, Sergeant Ruawai Maaka, is an enthusiastic believer — but as a whole, the situation is not very glamorous.

It makes sense for CW to air Wellington Paranormal — after all, it shares much in common with FX’s What We Do In The Shadows. Both were created by Clement and Waititi, and both are rooted in the 2014 comedy. The supernatural-themed What We Do In The Shadows is FX’s most important show: it may be lagging in the ratings behind American Horror Story, but AHS is entering season 10, and its ratings have been on the decline since season 3. WWDITS, on the other hand, has been growing in popularity. But this begs the question: how are Wellington Paranormal and the TV show version of What We Do In The Shadows related?

The main characters in Wellington Paranormal actually appear in the original WWDITS movie. In the scene, the officers show up to investigate a “possible forced entry” as well as reports of “a rather large amount of shrieking.” The one vampire Viago hypnotizes them into not noticing “anything out of the ordinary,” which leads to a very funny scene of the constables performing a welfare check (during which they fail to react to the obviously vampiric activities in the home). In 2016, after the success of the indie film, Waititi and Clement announced that they were developing a TV series based on O’Leary and Minogue, which became Wellington Paranormal. Both the movie and the spinoff TV series, What We Do In The Shadows, are set in Wellington, New Zealand.

The TV show What We Do In The Shadows is, however, set in America. It was picked up by FX in 2018, just before Wellington Paranormal debuted in New Zealand. WWDITS has been a critically acclaimed series for the network, and was one of the best TV shows of 2020. At this time, it’s unclear if the two shows exist in the same universe — although there is strong evidence that they do. Clement and Waititi reprise their roles from the movie in the vampire-based TV show, so it stands to reason that they could, theoretically, show up in Wellington Paranormal — especially since Minogue and O’Leary have met them before.
