How Wrong Turn 3 Finally Killed Three Finger

The sadistic Odets siblings of the Wrong Turn franchise may seem unkillable, but Wrong Turn 3 actually did kill off Three Finger for good – and in an appropriately gory fashion. The Wrong Turn series has worn many faces over the years (sometimes literally) as the sequels have switched tones and styles. In an attempt to keep up with genre trends, the movies have spanned three distinct types of subgenres across their seven outings.

The original Wrong Turn is a tense wilderness horror that revisits the “mountain men vs city folk” thrills of 70s hits like Deliverance or The Hills Have Eyes, albeit with less social commentary and more irritating slasher movie victims. The sequels strayed into gorier horror-comedy territory, focusing less on scares and more on gruesome gags. However, 2021’s Wrong Turn reboot introduced new villains and a more self-serious tone, abandoning the theatrics of the earlier movies for a grounded, gruesome morality tale.

One thing all of the earlier movies in the series had in common was their antagonists, the inbred cannibal clan the Odets brothers, a triumvirate of monsters comprised of One Eye, Saw Tooth, and Three Finger. Of the trio, Three Finger is the most sadistic and murderous, offing a whopping 206 victims throughout the franchise. He’s also the most prominent of the villains, appearing in all six pre-reboot outings. Three Finger is the main antagonist of the first six films but despite his apparent immortality, he is actually killed off as early as Wrong Turn 3. After two Wrong Turn movies of inbred cannibals killing innocent city folk, the ending of Wrong Turn 3 sees the movie’s protagonist Nate kill Three Finger during a fight by stabbing him through the head with a meat hook. He then dumps the body on the hood of a burning truck, which promptly explodes.

Viewers could be forgiven for assuming Three Finger’s death in the third film is yet another fake-out from the series. After all, the events of the first two entries both end with the unlikely sight of a post-explosion Three Finger surviving to slash another day. However, the series never actually added any events to its canon after Three Finger’s apparent Wrong Turn 3 death, with later movies being prequels or, like 2021’s Wrong Turn reboot, relaunches of the series.

These later sequels served to explain how Three Finger and his brothers escaped an asylum and murdered an entire town’s worth of civilians before eventually taking refuge in the woods. Interestingly, the increased gore quotient of these later movies, as well as the unkillable status of their villains, made the trio deadlier than the first three films depicted them. The killers survive even more brutal punishment in Wrong Turn 4, 5, and 6 than they endure in Wrong Turn 3 and still consistently come out on top, which calls Three Finger’s death at the end of the third film into question. However, the critical lambasting received by the later sequels, in particular, means the siblings will likely stay dead for good, no matter what the future of the Wrong Turn franchise is.
