Hugh Jackman Details How Much Footage Was Cut From First XMen Movie

Hugh Jackman has revealed that 2000’s X-Men was originally meant to be much longer than its final theatrical runtime. Jackman has played the fan-favorite mutant Wolverine nine times across the various X-Men films and spinoffs, before finally hanging his claws up following 2017’s Logan. He even managed a quasi-tenth appearance in a post-credit scene from 2018’s Deadpool 2 via archival footage that was filmed for the 2009 Wolverine: Origins.

While Jackman is now synonymous with the X-Men role that catapulted him into superstardom, he wasn’t always intended to play the volatile mutant. Director Bryan Singer originally wanted fellow Aussie star, Russell Crowe, for the role. But Crowe turned the part down and recommended Jackman instead. Singer, however, would also offer the job to both Lord of the Rings’ Viggo Mortensen and Batwoman’s Dougray Scott, before finally signing Jackman on three weeks after filming had already commenced.

Now, in a new interview with Collider for Jackman’s latest film, Reminiscence, the star was asked which of his films had been changed the most in the editing room. Without hesitation, Jackman answered “X-Men One” and recalls that a lot more footage was filmed for the first X-Men than has ever been released. Check out what he had to say below:

“I’m probably speaking out of school… But a week before it came out, I think it was 47 minutes longer. I may be exaggerating … It was a lot. And maybe the week is an exaggeration, but I certainly… What we shot on, I remember going, “What happened to that scene and that character. What? Wait, whoa.” That movie from memory is about 100 minutes, I think. It was a lot longer, a lot longer, so that was definitely a big surprise to me.”

The habit of studios making changes to films during post-production has been getting a lot of attention recently, particularly Warner Bros.’ attempts to rework David Ayer’s original 2016 Suicide Squad. However, editing room changes to big-budget blockbusters are not that uncommon. With high expectations and the financial investments that go with them, studios often seek to ensure that the final product being released has the greatest chance of resonating with audiences and bringing in the almighty box office dollar. Sometimes, however, those changes fly in conflict with the director’s original vision and can result in a very different version of a film that may have been better left alone.

Whatever material from the original X-Men found its way onto the cutting room floor, however, certainly didn’t seem to do its original theatrical release any harm. Grossing over $296 million worldwide from a budget of $75 million, the film was by all measures both a critical and commercial success that would go on to spawn a franchise spanning two decades. Regardless, many X-Men fans still would be keen to learn more about this unseen footage, and what form the original film may have taken if it was left in. Only time will tell if it ever gets the opportunity to see the light of day.
