Hugh Jackmans Dream Role Is Jason From Friday The 13th

One of Hugh Jackman’s acting dreams was to play Jason Voorhees in a Friday The 13th sequel. The 1980s gave birth to a few slasher movie icons, including Freddy Krueger, Pinhead and Chucky. Jason is one of the most famous, though it was actually his mother Pamela who was committing the murders in the original Friday The 13th. Adult Jason first appeared in Friday The 13th Part 2, and over the years he’s been sent to space, fought Freddy and even went to Hell.

While some movies in the Friday The 13th saga are (far) better than others, the franchise and Jason have a devoted following. Sadly, the series is currently tied up in a messy legal battle, with the most recent outing being 2009’s remake. Many actors have donned the hockey mask over the years, including Ted White, Richard Brooker, Derek Mears and Wrong Turn 2’s Ken Kirzinger. For followers of the series, Kane Hodder is the definitive take on Jason, having played the role for four movies and giving the slasher a unique personality and body language.

Given the lack of speaking lines or dramatic arcs to play, in addition to the physical requirements of the part, stuntmen are often hired to play Jason. Before Hodder’s first appearance in Friday The 13 Part VII: The New Blood, no actors had returned to the Jason role. Coincidentally, Hodder’s Friday The 13th Part VII co-star Kevin Spirtas was once hired as the standby for Hugh Jackman in the hit musical The Boy From Oz, and Spirtas revealed during the documentary Crystal Lake Memories that Jackman’s dream growing up was to play Jason.

The documentary also features footage of a cameraman asking Hugh Jackman about wanting to play Jason in a Friday The 13th movie, to which the actor smiled and replied “Oh man, you’ve done your research!” Jackman has some slashing experience playing Wolverine throughout the X-Men franchise, but it would be surreal seeing him step behind the hockey mask to play Jason. Given the fact his face would never be seen and he wouldn’t have any dialogue, it’s supremely doubtful producers would ever offer him the part.

There would also be his fee to consider, which would be considerably larger than hiring a stuntman for the part. That said, given that Hugh Jackman also likes to mix things up in his career and do things for the fun of it, maybe he’d be willing to step into what was once a dream part when he was growing up. Having an actor of Jackman’s stature playing Jason Voorhees would be a fascinating experiment, and given his action and dance background, he would have the right physicality for the slasher and could bring new layers to the non-verbal role. Maybe when Friday The 13th is eventually rebooted, producers can at least given Jackman a call – even if a return as Wolverine is more likely than a stint as Jason.
