Hulk Trades in His Purple Pants for an Awesome New Costume

Warning: contains major spoilers for Immortal Hulk #50!

Much to the dismay of fans, Immortal Hulk #50 just closed the most recent chapter of the Jade Giant’s career, but the issue didn’t end without teasing an awesome new costume that fans will hopefully see again soon. Written by Al Ewing with art by Joe Bennett, the issue sees Hulk rescue Bruce Banner from the clutches of the Leader, confront the One-Above-All to try and discover the source of his suffering, and finally return to Earth, merging Bruce Banner’s disparate personas into a new, improved system.

The adventure is traumatic for Bruce, who doesn’t quite remember the intense suffering he underwent, but thankfully he’s cared for on his return by the Fantastic Four. While Thing recently gained some affection for the Hulk, it’s Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, who provides new threads for the beleaguered gamma scientist. But what makes this new costume special is that it’s made of unstable molecules.

Discovered by Reed Richards, unstable molecules possess the ability to mimic physical changes in their wearer. They’re famously used by the Fantastic Four, allowing the Human Torch’s costume to combust, Mister Fantastic’s to stretch, and Invisible Woman’s to turn invisible without damage. For Bruce Banner, this means his snappy new suit can fit him like a glove while growing to Hulk size when he transforms, then shrinking back as needed. Where once the Hulk was confined to wearing giant purple pants, now he’ll emerge in a shirt and tie, possibly acknowledging the new role of the Joe Fixit persona in the Hulk ‘system.’ As a sign of the peace he feels now that his other selves are working in accord, Bruce even asks Reed to change the suit’s color, giving him an iconic purple and green ensemble.

Sadly, fans don’t get to see Bruce Hulk-out in the suit, but it’s possible this will be the case when Donny Cates and Ryan Ottley’s Hulk #1 arrives November 10. It’s unlikely that Bruce Banner will stick with this costume longterm, but it would be a shame to skip right over it without showcasing Hulk’s triumphant new look. Hulk has worn suits before, both during the Joe Fixit Hulk’s time as a Las Vegas bouncer, and in the form of the cloned “Nerd Hulk” in Ultimate Comics. But while one had the look of a stereotypical mobster and the other was deliberately made to seem shabby and pathetic, this new ensemble is a symbol of Bruce being reborn as a hero, albeit one with an edge.

Even if Cates and Ottley don’t include this new suit, it will be a while before fans see Hulk’s purple pants again. A variant cover for Immortal Hulk #50 teased Hulk’s new space gear, while Free Comic Book Day 2021: Avengers/Hulk #1’s ‘Operation: Smashtronaut’ saw him express plans to leave the planet. With a robotic helmet and jet pack, Hulk is primed to become an adventurer with a brand new look, though hopefully there’ll still be time on Earth to depict the unstable molecule suit, if only to tie the new series to its incredibly popular predecessor.

While Immortal Hulk may have done away with the purple pants, an early issue actually shared their origin, as a young Bruce Banner expressed the wish to buy multiple versions of the same outfit, mimicking Einstein with the claim that he’d save brainpower by not having to choose different clothing each day (he went with purple as he thought the unusual choice would be seen as stylish.) Much of Immortal Hulk has explored Bruce trying to break old habits, and the fact he ends the story with a sophisticated alternative to waking up near-naked in the middle of the desert is a sign of how far he’s come. Of course, any iconic costume is destined to return in comics, but for now, the Hulk is wandering the Marvel Universe in his most stylish outfit yet, enjoying some much-needed respite before blasting off into space.
