The Hunger Games prequel movie, based on Suzanne Collins’ upcoming novel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, follows a young Coriolanus Snow – and here’s who we think should play him. Donald Sutherland played President Snow in the original Hunger Games movies, but considering that the new story takes place decades before Katniss Everdeen became the Mockingjay, Sutherland can’t return in the prequel, at least not in the main role.

The Hunger Games films told the story of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, two tributes from District 12 forced to compete in the Capitol’s annual Hunger Games – a demonstration of savagery in which 24 contestants fight to the death. However, Katniss fought against the Capitol and she quickly became a rebellious symbol of President Snow’s abusive tyranny. The films were commercially and critically successful, with The Hunger Games ranking amongst the best YA adaptations. However, the decision to split the final book, Mockingjay, into two parts proved to be a controversial decision, one that led to the series ending with a whimper. But now, Lionsgate is revisiting Panem with Collins’ newest story – set 64 years before her first book.

The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ story follows a young Coriolanus Snow as he mentors a tribute from District 12 for the 10th annual Hunger Games. This means that any actor taking the role has to follow in the footsteps of Sutherland’s chilling performance as more wicked Snow. Moreover, they’ll have to bring a charismatic performance considering Collins’ novel is framing Snow as a protagonist, of sorts, while still capturing his brutality. It’s sure to be a challenging role for any actor to delve into and it’ll be interesting to see just where the character goes in the book – considering audiences know the darker side to his story, becoming a dictator many years later. Lionsgate will want an actor that can live up to Sutherland’s performance but also underpin the role with humanity. Here are a few actors we think are best suited to play a young Snow.

Will Poulter

Will Poulter is no stranger to YA adaptions, having played Gally in The Maze Runner and, subsequently, Maze Runner: The Death Cure. Playing a resentful character is no new challenge for the actor, either. Gally was considered the antagonist of the first Maze Runner film, but Poulter has also sunk his teeth into darker roles in Midsommar and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. He has shown his acting chops time and time again; from charismatic performances like We’re The Millers to more bitter characters in the aforementioned films, he has the range and diversity necessary to play a young Snow well, as his ability to be charismatic and also intimidating has been displayed impressively throughout his career thus far.

While Poulter is on the older side, considering Coriolanus is supposed to be 18 years old in Collins’ new story, the actor has played younger characters before. His younger face gives him flexibility with the age range, plus he doesn’t look too dissimilar to the concept art of Snow.

Dacre Montgomery

Dacre Montgomery is best known for his role as Billy in Stranger Things, and after delivering an intimidating performance in season 2, he gave captivating and emotionally-charged performance in season 3, which was the complete opposite of what he did earlier. Beyond Stranger Things, though, he also showed his capability of starring in a lead role in 2017’s Power Rangers. His role as Jason Scott couldn’t be further apart from Billy; in embodying the Red Ranger, Montgomery showed audiences his softer and more heroic side. Knowing how Snow’s arc plays out, this turn from charming leading man to tyrannical monster has been echoed by Dacre’s move from charming Red Ranger to the utterly terrifying, possessed Billy. Considering he was able to pull both personalities off with aplomb, he would be able to shed some light on Snow’s more sympathetic side but remain the firm, power-hungry kingpin that audiences know him to be in the later films.

Lucas Till

If there’s an actor that can deliver Snow’s compassion with conviction, it’s Lucas Till. Till has a very expansive filmography, with credits from tent-poles such as X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse to the titular role in MacGyver. He’s slightly older than both Montgomery and Poulter, but he’s become a versatile actor with the relevant skillset for the role. In Bravetown, Till plays Josh – an initially hotheaded character with a rebellious streak that learns about the importance of connecting to others and opening himself up to the world. Even though the film hits some generic beats, Till anchors it with subliminal acting. MacGyver gives him a chance to further flex those muscles as a U.S secret operative forced to think his way out of precarious situations.

From the little backstory there is on Snow, fans know that he was intelligent and kind before succumbing to the ways of the Capitol. Considering The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will have him leading the story, Till has the personality and acting abilities to bring a gravitas to Snow. He even came close to snagging the role of the shameless boy with the bread: Peeta Mellark. Josh Hutcherson was great as Mellark but Lionsgate have an opportunity to bring Till into the world he just missed out on back in 2012. He can bring a lot to the character, not least of which is the humanity that Collins is looking to explore.

Miles Heizer

Miles Heizer has mostly stuck to TV roles or small appearances in films like Love, Simon and Nerve over the years, but the young actor has never had much of a leading part. The most sizable role that Heizer has had is as Alex Standall in Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, which has been great in allowing Heizer to flex a whole range of emotions as Standall. From the genuine kindness and consideration that he shows towards Jessica Davis and Hannah Baker in season 1 to the emotional vacancy he expresses after the former’s suicide, Alex Standall has been a roller-coaster of a character. Being able to pull that off is tough, plus he can hold his own in a scene populated with several characters. These are all abilities an actor would need to play a young Snow in the Hunger Games prequel movie.

Nerve also embellishes this further by showing a softer side to Heizer, though his character Tommy has a darker life than initially expected. Tommy is the dark horse of the film, taking down Nerve from the sidelines. It’s a similar trait to Coriolanus Snow, who is known for his puppet-mastery. Heizer does well in these misleading roles, Alex and Tommy both included; his characters are often not as they first appeared and it’s this chameleon-like ability that would make him a great pick for Snow.

Casey Cott

Another actor with limited screen-time yet to be given a leading opportunity is Casey Cott. Cott’s credits include appearances in various TV series, but he’s most well known for Kevin Keller in Riverdale. While the show has admittedly become a far more obscure over the years, Cott’s acting has always been something to count on from week-to-week. Kevin is known as quite a boisterous, bubbly personality, and he often struggles with his sexuality; this causes him to be quite reckless and impulsive.

The later seasons of the series have been exploring a more heedless, volatile side to the character, leading him into troublesome situations. It’s an unexpected turn considering Cott’s more outgoing approach in the first season. However, it’s the conviction that The Hunger Games prequel would require from an actor. Snow has similar traits to Keller – loyal, confident, opinionated. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will explore how he goes from charismatic youth to the reckless, bitter figurehead that leads the Capitol. It’s an arc that Cott has had experience with; Keller might not be quite as dangerous as Snow, but there’s far more to his bubbly veneer than meets the eye, and that’s what is needed for someone to play a young Corlionaus Snow.
