The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 might just steal the crown of “Most Awkwardly Title Movie of 2014” from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, but at least it’s in a good position for box office success – as the last movie in the series, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, was domestically the highest-grossing movie released in 2013.

Covering the first half of events in the final book of Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games trilogy, Mockingjay – Part 1 will see the Games themselves left behind all together as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and her allies rally in District 13 and prepare to lead a rebellion of united Districts against the Capitol. Meanwhile, Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) has been captured and has seemingly become a puppet to be used in President Snow’s campaign of propaganda.

Of course, the San Diego Comic-Con 2014 trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 made it clear that Katniss herself is also being used as a tool for propaganda by the scheming Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman) and Alma Coin (Julianne Moore). Now Lionsgate has released a new set of character posters that clearly show life behind the walls of District 13 is pretty far from a utopia. At least Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks) has been able to arrange her drab District 13 clothes into something vaguely fashionable.

While they might do a decent job of capturing the unglamorous realities of life in a rebel stronghold, these portraits unfortunately just aren’t as interesting to look at as, for example, the Capitol’s propaganda posters. It matches the description of District 13 from the books quite well, but unfortunately accuracy doesn’t always make for a compelling poster, especially compared to some of the past marketing for the Hunger Games movies.

Katniss in particular has been the subject of some great posters in the past, most notably the artwork of her standing majestically on top of a cliff framed by some clouds shaped like Mockingjay wings, which was released for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. If the District 13 rebels want to win over citizens of the other Districts, they would do well to start putting up a few posters like that.

Since these six posters only represent a small fraction of The Hunger Games saga’s massive cast of characters, we can no doubt expect to see many more in the days and weeks ahead, leading up to the release of Mockingjay- Part 1.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is set for release on November 21, 2014.
