Amazon Prime’s television version of I Know What You Did Last Summer has officially wrapped up season 1 and fans are still buzzing about it. The updated and episodic take on the ’90s slasher kept things interesting with plot twists, brutal kills, and most importantly of all, some truly complex and flawed characters.

Considering what most of them do throughout the series so far, it’s difficult to really see many of them as being likable. Despite their questionable actions and decisions, some characters do rank above others in terms of how much the audience will likely relate to them or root for them.

10 Clara

For a lot of the story, it seems like Clara (Brooke Bloom) might be the one behind the killings. If she didn’t kill anyone, then viewers at least knew something was off about her given the way she took Riley’s body after finding it.

Although it was ultimately determined that she didn’t murder anyone, Clara was still not someone anyone wanted to cheer for. She was willing to do immoral things that she believed in, like taking both Lennon’s and Riley’s bodies for experiments. She didn’t get as much time as others on screen to develop outside of that.

9 Dylan

Another character who was suspected of being the serial killer was Dylan (Ezekiel Goodman). Like Clara, he was ultimately not the one behind it but his only redeeming quality was that he showed more remorse for what he and his friends did than the rest of the group. Other than that, Dylan was problematic.

He kept important secrets from his friends, especially about Clara’s death, and hurt Alison long before any deaths took place. Dylan also proved to be controlling and exhibited stalker behavior. Though he gets the raw end of the deal at the conclusion of the story, some fans online have noted that they prefer the actual killer to him in terms of both likability and as a romantic interest for Alison.

8 Alison

As the protagonist of the story, you might expect Alison (Madison Iseman) to be much more likable than she is. However, her tragic story is one filled with ups and downs. At first, she gains sympathy as the girl who basically gets run over in every situation by her twin.

The reveal that Lennon actually died and Alison assumed her identity changed things. In Alison’s quest to keep that a secret at all costs, she commits some truly heinous acts. Rather than own up to what happened, she allows most of her friends to die, and given a final chance to come clean, she lies about Dylan and has him arrested.

7 Bruce

Alison and Lennon’s father Bruce (Bill Heck) feels like the kind of person who is easy to root for. After his wife walked out on their family, Bruce took care of his daughters on his own but strained relationships became evident and they haunted him and his daughters.

Lennon was crushed under the weight of the truth about her mother, while Alison felt Bruce always preferred her sister to her. Bruce also kept far too many secrets from his girls, which came back to bite him. Though some of his intentions are good, it’s at his urging that Alison lies so much.

6 Lennon

Almost immediately, the audience gets the sense that they will strongly dislike Lennon (Madison Iseman). She’s mean, impulsive, and hurts her friends. She has a lot of self-destructive behavioral tendencies like never truly opening up to Margot’s love or sleeping with Dylan as a way to upset Alison.

As the show progresses, it becomes clear that Lennon is someone who has experienced a fair amount of trauma and it helps explain some of her actions. A lot of what she does is a defense mechanism to not let anyone get too close to hurt her. Ultimately, Lennon was also someone who may not have been likable but at least she wasn’t shy about being that way.

5 Margot

One of the biggest shocks of the season comes right in the finale when it gets revealed that Margot (Brianne Tju) is the one killing everyone (with the help of her bodyguard). Obviously, that makes her pretty unlikeable but for most of the series, she’s actually arguably the most likable person.

Margot can be self-obsessed but she’s often the person who makes the audience laugh the most and she genuinely cares for her friends. Her murder spree stems from a twisted place of love for Lennon/Alison, which makes her all the more tragic. Despite this, there’s already a large contingent of fans who adore the LGBTQ+ romantic pairing of Margot and Alison.

4 Courtney

Although not part of the main group of teens or even the parent of the protagonist, Courtney (Cassie Beck) is still a prominent player in the story. She’s Riley’s mother and the biggest issue with her character is that she doesn’t seem very attentive as a mom.

Even when Riley is calling her in a dire situation, Courtney pays more attention to drama in her neighborhood. However, it’s commendable to see how protective Courtney gets in her quest to find the missing Riley. Courtney also gets to deliver some of the show’s best quips while cracking wise as she works for Bruce.

3 Lyla

In a lot of murder-mystery stories, there tends to be a plot twist where someone in law enforcement is revealed to be connected to the deaths somehow. Thankfully, this show avoided that with Lyla (Fiona Rene) as she proved to legitimately just be a police officer doing her job.

For most of the season, Lyla is the butt of the jokes when it comes to Courtney or Margot and her relationship with Bruce isn’t a popular one. Still, Lyla attempted to do what was right at every turn despite everyone else around her being liars and schemers.

2 Johnny

Poor Johnny (Sebastian Amoruso) got the short end of the stick. He honestly steals the show in terms of being someone you want to root for in the first two episodes. His friendship/past romance with Margot makes for an interesting duo and he was shown to have a special connection with Alison.

Unfortunately, Johnny is the first member of the group to be a victim of the murderer. He was so likable that expanding on his character would’ve only made a later death hurt that much more. Johnny was one of the few characters who never really showed any signs of being a bad person.

1 Riley

Similar to Johnny, Riley (Ashley Moore) is someone who never really came across as a bad person. She is the town’s resident drug dealer but she’s a caring person who always has her friends’ backs and never tries to hurt any of them. Her death stings the most for the audience.

Riley also gets points for being the smartest person around at times. She kind of speaks for the audience when she points out that something is off about Lennon before anyone else catches on. Hopefully, her unexpected revival at the end of the season doesn’t change who she is as a person.
