When iCarly went off the air in 2012, fans were devastated and naturally wanted more, and these sentiments would eventually be satisfied with the release of a reboot series in 2021. As with all reboots, things aren’t exactly the same as the original, and the biggest difference in the iCarly reboot is the obvious absence of Sam Puckett, one of the main characters of the original series.

Sam’s absence means the chance to see the difference in Carly’s and Freddie’s lives without Sam around, and thus, leaves room for new characters. Yet, Sam’s absence also means the dynamics between the original trio of friends has disappeared, and plenty of storylines and comedic aspects along with them.

10 Fine Without Sam: Gave Sam A Relatively Believable Storyline

According to Carly, the explanation for Sam’s noticeable absence on the iCarly reboot is due to the fact that Sam has joined a biker gang. Considering Sam’s past with hanging with the wrong crowds and even landing in juvenile detention on a few occasions, this isn’t surprising.

Sam is still the wild and violent person that she was before, if Carly’s additional “I hope they’re okay” in reference to the bikers is anything to go by. Sam is still able to more than fend for herself, and it sounded like Sam was happy with the biker gang. Though audiences miss her, they can rest assured that Sam’s living her best life.

9 The Show Needs Sam: The Lack Of Skits

Sam and Carly were comical geniuses when it came to their webcast, especially where it concerned skits. Whether they were engaging in “random dancing” or performing a skit with the characters of the “idiot farm girl” and “the cowboy,” the two were nothing short of uproarious.

With Sam gone, the lack of the comical aspect of their skits and other recurring gags really shows, as it was part of the charm of the original series.

8 Fine Without Sam: It Gives Carly A Chance To Make A Show Of Her Own

In the reboot, Carly’s storyline begins when she goes through a painful break-up and begins a new chapter because of it, leading to her deciding to go back to her roots in webcasting—with updated technology, of course.

Carly needed a new purpose and something to pour her energy and creativity into, and, in a way, it helps her more to do it alone and blaze a trail of her own than pick up where she left off with Sam back in the day. It’s hard, but it’s something that Carly needs to help her grow and to help her heal.

7 The Show Needs Sam: Sam’s Shenanigans

Sam was known for being a tomboy, for being incredibly strong, and for doing bad things on occasion. In the pilot episode of the original series, Sam had convinced Carly to take the blame for her when Sam had placed a teacher’s head on the body of a rhinoceros and placed multiple flyers of the photo all over the school.

Early on, audiences knew Sam was usually up to something, and that something usually didn’t have great results. Oftentimes, Sam’s shenanigans were a great source of comedic relief, or part of an important storyline, as was the case when Sam urged Carly to teach her to be girlier and Sam ended up finding out that just being herself was the best thing.

6 Fine Without Sam: Sam’s Absence Means New Characters

Harper and Carly are best friends in the reboot, and Millicent is Freddie’s stepdaughter. Both of these characters offer new dynamics and storylines in the reboot, creating new instances of comedy and heartfelt moments as a result.

Sam may be missed, but there are new characters for audiences to love. Plus, these new characters change up the reboot compared to the original, so it doesn’t feel like iCarly is being redundant in its storylines. Millicent is certainly wise for her age, and Harper’s passion for fashion, as well as her sense of humor, make both of them memorable characters in their own right.

5 The Show Needs Sam: The Original Trio

Nothing can replace the original trio of future web stars who started the iCarly that audiences know and love. From Freddie’s extensive knowledge of technology and awkward personality to Sam’s aggressiveness and Carly’s sweet demeanor, the trio all had different personalities that both clashed and worked well together.

For the most part, they were a great team. Occasionally, though, Sam took things too far when she gave Freddie a hard time, especially when she revealed on a webcast that Freddie had never kissed anyone, humiliating him. Still, there’s a certain sentimental aspect when it comes to remembering the original cast, and, because of this, it makes it harder for audiences to watch the reboot without Sam in it.

4 Fine Without Sam: Realistic Circumstances For The Returning Characters

Given how close the main characters of Sam, Freddie, and Carly were when they were younger, it’s not surprising that they’re still tight. Even if Sam isn’t present, Carly and Freddie are obviously still good friends and mention Sam every so often. Obviously, they’re still tight with Spencer, too. It’s not unrealistic that not all of them would be together, hence Sam’s absence, as life and its circumstances lead people on various paths.

Meanwhile, Carly’s decision to return to webcasting, along with Freddie’s encouragement and help, is realistic. Not everything has worked out for Carly and Freddie, but they still have each other, and they’re figuring things out. Spencer has since become a wealthy artist, and, given all the setbacks he had in the original show, it’s not so far-fetched to think that his work would have definitely paid off down the line.

3 The Show Needs Sam: Sam & Freddie’s Love Story

Sam and Freddie certainly didn’t start out as a couple. In fact, they pretty much detested one another and frequently gave one another a hard time—especially Sam, who always had a jab in store for Freddie. Yet, somehow, they became one another’s first kiss and eventually became a couple afterwards.

Carly was certainly shocked, as were audiences at the time. Audiences can’t help but imagine where the two would be today, especially since Freddie is now divorced, single, and back on the dating scene. Would he and Sam get back together? The show is certainly missing out on this great storyline given Sam’s absence.

2 Fine Without Sam: It’s Bringing Back Other Familiar Characters

iCarly had plenty of memorable guest stars back in the day from super fan Mandy to Freddie’s overprotective mother Mrs. Benson and Groovy Smoothie employee T-Bo. In the reboot, fans have gotten to see some familiar faces, such as Freddie’s mom, obsessed iCarly fan Nora, and former iCarly nemesis Nevel Papperman.

Mrs. Benson is still overprotective, Nora still seems a little too interested in Carly and Freddie, and Nevel tried to trick Carly into marrying him in the reboot, showing that these familiar characters are still their same selves.

1 The Show Needs Sam: Sam & Carly’s Friendship

Carly’s and Sam’s friendship was essentially the core of iCarly; one was rarely seen without the other and they were incredibly close. Though they couldn’t be more opposite, it rarely ever creates a distance or rift between them. Like all best friends, the two tended to fight, but they always made up. Their inside jokes and goofing off led to their many skits and memorable iCarly moments, and their friendship was certainly #friendshipgoals.

Carly helped Sam stay away from trouble as much as she could, and Sam often helped Carly out of trouble, like the time Carly got in over her head by attending a party held by some friends of Sam’s from juvenile detention. Without Sam, the show just isn’t the same, and audiences certainly miss seeing more Sam and Carly friendship moments.
