iMac Desktop Redesign Reportedly Coming Rumored Upgrades Explained

New iMac desktop computers may be coming from Apple this year and rumors suggest exciting changes. At the 2020 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple announced that its entire Mac computer line will be converted to Apple Silicon within two years. So far, the Mac mini is the only desktop to get the latest M1 processor and while it is fast for a laptop, it may not be sufficient when compared to tower computers.

Apple currently sells three screen-variations of the iMac and one type of iMac Pro. All have basically the same design, with a large monitor that also houses the computer and drive, effectively merging a tower PC into the monitor. All-in-one designs have existed since the early days of the personal computer, but the iMac was among the first to eliminate the boxy shape, so that the computer resembles a flat-panel monitor. The design frees up desk space making it a more attractive option for home use. Also, bundling the monitor means Apple has integrated another component, allowing it to be optimized for use with a Mac and lowering cost by eliminating a separate case and power supply.

The next iMac to arrive is expected to be powered by Apple Silicon, which is already interesting enough, since it will likely be a more powerful chip than what’s included with the M1 Mac mini. However, perhaps even more exciting is the possibility of a redesign. The iMac has not had a major change to its appearance since 2012. The same flat-panel display with wide black bezels and large bottom panel have greeted owners for the past eight years. Now, according to Bloomberg, Apple may be ready to refresh the look with more modern styling.

New Chip & New Look For iMac?

Since the iMac is a much larger desktop than the Mac mini, it typically has the option for higher performance hardware. This includes faster processors and better discrete graphics. While the new Apple M1 is blazing fast, it can’t compete with the graphics power of a high-end iMac or the multi-core processing power of an iMac Pro. If Apple is replacing those powerful iMac models, it will need to include a next-generation Apple Silicon chip and possibly allow the use of discrete graphics. A new, faster chip obviously benefits the user, bringing more powerful processing of videos, 3D modeling and gaming within reach at a potentially lower price, just as the new M1 Mac mini has.

The Bloomberg report also mentioned the bezels would be slimmer and the bottom panel greatly reduced. This means more screen in a smaller package. If this is true, Apple could either reduce the physical size of the iMac or keep the same outside dimensions and increase the display size. When it updates its iPhone and iPad devices with smaller bezels, it usually opts for larger displays. Currently, the iMac is available in two sizes, with a 21.5-inch or 27-inch screen. Whether the display increases or the overall size shrinks, an update to the iMac look and internals would be an exciting and welcome Apple change.
