In The Heights Why Stephanie Beatriz Has Such A Small Part

The movie adaptation of In The Heights features an ensemble cast of characters and one of its most recognizable stars is Stephanie Beatriz, but she doesn’t have that big of a role in the film. Directed by Jon M. Chu, and based on Lin Manuel-Miranda’s award-winning Broadway show, the film’s story revolves around the real-life New York neighborhood and the tight-knit community that inhabits it. The Hamilton creator started writing In The Heights during college, which was his first musical, debuting on stage in the mid-2000s to critical acclaim.

Due to its success, the movie adaptation of In The Heights was already being discussed as early as 2008, with Universal Pictures announcing their intent to produce the project. But due to a series of hurdles, it took so much longer before the project actually come to fruition. Despite that, it was well worth the wait. Much like its Broadway musical counterpart, the In The Heights movie has been praised for its musicality and heartfelt narrative. The performances from the actors have also been commended. The movie brought back some actors from the story’s original stage play such as Olga Merediz as Abuela Claudia and Lin-Manuel Miranda, albeit in a different role as the Piragua Guy compared to the playing Usnavi. However, it mostly recast its main players including Carla, who’s portrayed by Beatriz.

While every cast member from In The Heights brought their A-game to the project and is a star in their own right, Beatriz is arguably one of the more established actors in its ensemble. She’s best known for playing Detective Rosa Diaz in the hit TV sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine for seven seasons thus far. But aside from her leading role in the Fox-turned-NBC sitcom, she has also appeared in other projects such as Modern Family and Short Term 12. Despite her mainstream notability, Beatriz’s role in In The Heights is considerably small. While she’s part of most musical segments in the movie, there’s barely any focus on her character at all. There’s a couple of possible explanation for this.

Firstly, while the narrative is about a community, its core story is really focused on four main characters: Usnavi (Anthony Ramos); Nina (Leslie Grace), his childhood friends who came home from a year at Stanford; Benny (Corey Hawkins), Usnavi’s friend and Nina’s boyfriend; and Vanessa (Melissa Barrera), an aspiring fashion designer and Usnavi’s love interest. Carla, on the other hand, was a hairstylist at the neighborhood’s salon, and although she and her fellow co-workers were always in the know of what’s happening around town, they’re technically supporting characters.

Secondly, even with her limited role in In The Heights, it was already difficult to make Beatriz’s schedule work in relation to her regular stint with Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Filming for the Chu-helmed project began in June 2019 on location in New York City. It coincided with filming for her sitcom, hence why she’s barely in the Brookly Nine-Nine season 7 premiere. Despite being set in the fictional 99th Precinct in Brooklyn, the series is actually being filmed in Los Angeles which made things more complicated for Beatriz to do both projects. The executive producers of the show, luckily, were more than happy to accommodate the film’s demands. Co-creator Dan Goor revealing that everyone was so excited for Beatriz to join In The Heights, especially considering how important it was for the actress to join the project.

Despite her smaller role, Beatriz was nonetheless thrilled to be part of In The Heights’ cast. She’s not only proud about a film that features a predominantly Latino cast but also playing a character that represents the LGBT community. Unlike the Broadway musical, the film adaptation of In The Heights saw Carla and the salon owner, Daniela, being in a romantic relationship rather than just being co-workers.
