Indiana Jones Voted Greatest Movie Character Of AllTime

Indiana Jones is crowned by fans as the greatest movie character Of all-time. One of Harrison Ford’s most iconic gig to date is another brainchild of George Lucas, who was also the man behind the veteran actor’s other quintessential rogue-type with a heart of gold role, Han Solo — apparently also on the list.

Debuting in 1981 in Raiders of the Lost Ark, Ford has gone on to reprise the role three more times: Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. While the most recent outing from the franchise was met with scathing reviews (despite a decent showing in the box office), the series is still heralded as a classic and the character dubbed as one of the most enduring. Playing the genius, snappy, but good-natured archaeologist solidified Ford’s claim as one of the biggest Hollywood stars. Given that, it is not really difficult to imagine fans rallying behind him and voting him as their pick for the greatest movie character ever.

The result has come courtesy of a poll spearheaded by Total Film (via Hindustan Times) where they asked fans to vote on who they think is the greatest movie character of all time. Indy nabs the top spot with Han Solo not far behind in third place, meanwhile, Batman is sandwiched between Ford’s classic gigs. Check out the voted top 25 (out of 100) below:

The list is a mix of characters from different genres, spanning from psychological thriller (Taxi Driver’s Travis Bickle) to more humorous turns like The Dude from The Big Lebowski. Having said that, all of them are undoubtedly unforgettable in their own respective rights. Some may even be more popular than the films that they’re originally from due to their roles’ significant impact on pop culture and the relentless referencing from die-hard fans. Admittedly, however, Jones remains to be a favorite as he has the ability to resonate with people. He is charming, witty and funny, and also openly flawed without being overly dramatic about it. If you examine most of the alpha male (or female) characters that have come after him, there is a sense that parts of them are patterned on the characterization of fedora-wearing professor.

Proof of just how timeless of a character Indiana Jones is, a fifth outing from the character’s titular character is currently on its way for a 2020 rollout. Once it is finally here, Ford’s mission to revive his holy trinity of iconic characters from the ’80s — Jones, Han, and Rick Deckard from Blade Runner will be complete. We just hope that like his Star Wars and Blade Runner resurgence, the Indiana Jones franchise will send the actor off on a high note.

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
