Infinite Ending Timeline & Mythology Explained (In Detail)

Infinite ended with the film’s reincarnated action hero, Evan McCauley, saving the world and but it also sets up a sequel that could expand the universe without starring Mark Wahlberg. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Infinite is a sci-fi action fantasy about an offshoot of the human race called the Infinites who reincarnate throughout history with all of their memories from their past lives intact. Evan joins up with the heroic faction of Infinites called the Believers to stop the Nihilists, led by the maniacal Bathurst (Chiwetel Ejiofor), from killing everyone in the world.

In Infinite’s final act, Bathurst took over the Believers’ hidden base, The Hub, and retrieved the power source for his doomsday weapon, the Egg, from the corpse of Heinrich Treadway (Dylan O’Brien), who was Evan McCauley’s previous life. The Nihilists also attacked the safehouse of Artisan (Jason Mantzoukas), where Bathurst blasted Evan in the head with his Dethroner, a gun that fires special bullets that can pull the soul out of an Infinite, which prevents them from reincarnating. However, Evan survived and followed his ally, Nora Brightman (Sophie Cookson), to Bathurst’s estate in Scotland. With the completed Egg, Bathurst was finally ready to fulfill his goal of mass genocide so that he can be free of the “curse” of perpetual reincarnation. It led to an action-packed showdown between Believers Evan and Nora vs. Bathurst and his Nihilist henchwoman, Agent Shin (Wallis Day) with the fate of the world and the lives of all of the Infinites at stake.

Infinite introduced some heady concepts and had intriguing ideas about what it would mean if a person could reincarnate into a new body but still keep all of their memories. However, as a big-budget sci-fi action movie, Infinite’s musings about reincarnation took a backseat to action movie tropes and a boilerplate plot of good guys trying to stop the bad guys from destroying the world. Here’s a breakdown of Infinite’s ending, how it sets up another movie, and the sprawling world the fantasy film introduced.

How Evan Stopped Bathurst’s Plan To End The World

Infinite Ending Timeline & Mythology Explained (In Detail)

Bathurst’s plan was to fly from his estate to Glasgow to detonate the Egg, which would then cascade around the world and accelerate as it kills more and more people. In fact, the Egg is so lethal that it would also kill all of the plants and animals in the world, whereas Thanos (Josh Brolin) wanted to kill half of all life in the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. Bathurst was so insane that even though killing every human would achieve his goal of leaving no one for an Infinite to reincarnate into, he still wanted every form of life on Earth dead.

However, Evan was able to ride a motorcycle off a cliff and land on the wing of Bathurst’s plane, where he used his samurai sword to keep from getting blown off the vehicle. However, thanks to Artisan’s memory tank, Evan finally unlocked all of his memories, most importantly, Heinrich Treadway’s. Evan also survived Bathurst’s Dethroner headshot because there was a steel plate in his head from a car accident in his youth. Now that he had full access to Treadway’s memories, Evan also downloaded the supernatural abilities that Treadway mastered, including being able to affect the world around him to defy physics. McCauley was able to walk on the wing of the plane without being blown off and he entered the aircraft to fight Bathurst. Now that Evan had become Treadway, he was also able to slash Bathurst’s bullets in midair with his sword.

The plane was damaged by Evan and Bathurst’s battle and the Egg was blown out of the aircraft. Both Infinites jumped after it and fought in mid-air, but Evan was able to disarm the device. To finish off Bathurst, Evan ran him through with his katana, took the Dethroner, and shot Bathurst in the head, which not only killed the villain but prevented him from reincarnating. So, in a way, Bathurst got what he wanted anyway since he was finally rid of the curse of eternal life. However, Evan didn’t survive the fall into the ocean but he died heroically saving the world and stopping Bathurst.

Nora Freed The Trapped Infinite Souls To Reunite With Abel

Infinite Ending Timeline & Mythology Explained (In Detail)

While Evan was stopping Bathurst, Nora’s task was to free the wall of Infinite souls that Bathurst had hoarded. Bathurst spent untold years shooting Believers with his Dethroner and the soul of each person he killed with his special bullets downloaded into a microchip that the villain displayed in a wall in his Scotland estate. One of the souls in the wall belonged to Abel Trask (Tom Hughes), who is Nora’s lover across their many lifetimes together.

Luckily, all it took to free the 200 Infinite souls Bathurst had collected was to use explosives to destroy the wall. However, Nora was mortally injured in the fight to reach Bathurst’s mansion so she told Artisan to leave while she stayed behind to detonate the wall and free the Infinites’ souls. Nora died in the explosion but she was content that she would be reunited with Abel in their next lives. Also, since Bathurst was shot with the Dethroner by Evan, the villain may be the only Infinite who is now permanently dead since Nora destroyed his soul storage unit and there was no surviving microchip that Bathurst’s soul could download into.

Infinite Sets Up A Sequel Without Mark Wahlberg

Infinite Ending Timeline & Mythology Explained (In Detail)

With the Egg destroyed and the 200 souls freed, all of the Infinites (except Bathurst) were able to reincarnate and they all came back to life as newborn infants simultaneously all over the world. Infinite the flash-forwards years into the future where an older Artisan finds Treadway/Evan reincarnated in Jakarta, Indonesia. (Artisan calls him ‘Treadway’ because he knew him as Treadway, whereas he only had a relatively brief encounter with Evan McCauley). After he gave the reborn Treadway’s father his Infinite business card, he returned Treadway’s samurai sword to its young owner. However, not only does the new Treadway have all of his prior abilities, he also already has all of his memories as well since he asked Artisan, “What took you so long?”

Meanwhile, the eternal romance between Nora and Abel continued and the reincarnated lovers found each other once again in “the Beginning”, meaning Angkor Wat in Cambodia, their traditional meeting place. The reborn Nora and Abel looked to be teenagers but they had all their memories and recognized each other immediately despite having new bodies. Strangely, Abel referred to his love as “Nora”, despite him not knowing her by that identity because he was trapped in Bathurst’s soul wall during her entire life as Nora Brightman. This was likely just for the audience’s benefit to make clear it was Abel and Nora reincarnated to anyone watching who was confused, but it still comes off as a plot hole.

Infinite’s ending also makes clear that the specific characters played by Mark Wahlberg and Sophie Cookson are dead so the actors wouldn’t return for a sequel about the new Treadway and Nora. It would have to be new actors playing their reincarnated roles, including an Asian male lead as Treadway in Infinite 2. Alternatively, Infinite has all of history to use for a prequel but that also couldn’t star Mark Wahlberg since he only found out he was an Infinite during the course of the movie. Another possibility would be to expand the Infinite universe and make another film about entirely different characters but still use Artisan as the common link between the movies.

Infinite’s Confusing Timeline Explained

Infinite Ending Timeline & Mythology Explained (In Detail)

Fans of movies about immortal warriors like The Old Guard, Highlander, and Marvel’s Eternals may find Infinite a bit confusing since it isn’t the same physical character who continues throughout time, just their souls in new bodies, necessitating different actors to play them once they reincarnate. Infinite can also be a headscratcher because of the way the movie presents the main characters’ lives and when the events of the film take place.

While there are occasional glimpses of Treadway, Bathurst, and Nora’s past lives, Infinite’s main story is set at three different points in time. The prologue involving Treadway, Abel, and Nora’s prior incarnation, Leona (Joana Ribiero) fighting Bathurst (Rupert Friend) in Mexico City is set in 1985. Infinite’s main story takes place in 2020, which means that since Treadway and Leona died the same night in 1985, both Evan McCauley and Nora Brightman are 35. It gets more confusing since Bathurst 1985 wasn’t clearly established to have also died that year, but Bathurst 2020 played by Chiwetel Ejiofor looks older than 35 but is either the same age or may even be younger than Evan McCauley. Finally, Infinite’s final scenes are a flashforward set at least 15 years later since the reincarnated Treadway, Nora, and Abel are teenagers so it has to be set around 2035, which is also reflected by how much Artisan has aged.

How Infinite’s Mythology Was Changed From The Book

Infinite is based on a sci-fi novel titled The Reincarnationist Papers by D. Eric Maikranz, but the filmmakers changed the book significantly to transform the property into a Hollywood action movie. In The Reincarnationist Papers, the protagonist, Evan Michaels, doesn’t know he’s been reincarnated and he’s plagued by the memories of his two past lives. This was turned into Evan McCauley being institutionalized as a schizophrenic in Infinite’s backstory. In the book, Evan meets a reincarnated woman named Poppy, who was turned into Nora Brightman in the film, although Poppy only remembers seven lives while Nora had dozens.

Like in Infinite, Poppy invites Evan into a secret society of 28 other reincarnated people called the Cognomina. Infinite upped the scale of the concept, expanded the number of Infinites to the hundreds, and changed the Cognomina into a faction war between the Believers, who want to use their skills to better humanity, and the Nihilists, who want to end the world. While the novel fully explores the joys and perils of continually re-experiencing your past lives, Infinite only touched upon these themes while focusing on action, swordplay, shootouts, and a standard plot of a hero trying to save the world from a supervillain.
